"Stand on business, defend trans people, don't let the bigots think they are normal or right or accepted. The rest is out of your control." A line that's gonna sit with me for a while.

Valerie Valkyrie@beezygrey.bsky.social

Personally, as a trans person who is a long-time WNBA fan, y'all gotta stop worrying about this. There's nothing you can do about shitty people being shitty. Stand on business, defend trans people, don't let the bigots think they are normal or right or accepted. The rest is out of your control.

Things must be going really badly for the slop machines if they're busy doing Weekly World News crap like this to try to convince people that Markov chains can do more than write bad code and drive people nuts.

The Met put its entire collection online for free so I made a game out of it! 10 artifacts a day, and you guess where and when each one's from. Anthropeum.com if anyone wants to give it a shot and leave feedback :) #history #archeology #arthistory #museums

Even if this was true (it isn't), the issue that it would be pointing to is the degradation of social sciences, not some nebulous "rise of AI" slopaganda.

Alexander Kustov@akoustov.bsky.social

Sorry, Bluesky, but I have to say it: AI can already do social science research better than most professors with PhDs. And, for the first time in my life, I really have no idea what happens in five years. Things are changing already, we just need to wake up.

Hockey draws the very worst out of people. It's a rotten sport built on rotten people rotting their sons with putrid dreams of pointless brutality. Maybe we in Canada can learn from this and stop lionizing the mediocre sons of cops and robbers.

No small part of what I look forward to after the fall of OpenAI is the end of this slopaganda. It's little more than ragebait and it permanently damages my opinion about any institution craven enough to publish it.

Researchers working with the A.I. system Claude have come to understand that the model’s selfhood, like our own, is a matter of both neurons and narratives. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/kEX1vV

They aren't. They're probability models. Hope that helps!

John Warner@biblioracle.bsky.social

I'm pretty sure I know. They aren't. We're not going to really be able to make a lot of progress in dealing with the implications of this tech unless and until we get rid of all this "woo-woo" talk about LLMs. Anthropic pushing this line is PR, unserious.

One of the main reasons I went to grad school was spite about this exact thing: I was told that I was bad at math, that I would never be a scientist, and I decided that I wasn't going to let those feelings get me down.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

Those who weren’t resigned to the Math Idiot Garbage Bin as kids may not grasp how much “if you’re bad at math, you’ll die in a ditch and all will be better off for it” sentiment was floating around in the 90s and 2000s, but it sure felt real to me. (my parents are great! It didn’t come from them!)

Bonus bit: because you don't have your own desk, it's quite likely that you don't even work near your team even if you're in the same building! If you wanted downtown Ottawa to not suck, getting rid of the $20 Sysco "lunch" slingers that prey on civil servants would be a great start.

Luke LeBrun@lukelebrun.ca

Two things I’m not sure is widely understood: 1. Many public servants no longer have their own desks and work in transient government co-working spaces 2. Many describe a Kafkaesque existence of going to physical offices only to spend their time on video calls with the people sitting next to them

The sans culottes in the United States are beginning to realize that they don't need the liberal nobility to push for needed reform. Schumer, like Lafayette before him, will fail to meet the moment and quite likely be brushed aside. The liberal nobles' offer is no longer acceptable.

Sean T. Collins@seantcollins.com

Now that Bluesky has enjoyed something for a full couple of hours of course it's time to go back into doom mode. "The Democrats will cave like they always do"? Guys, the Democrats *were* caving, until the people of Minnesota stopped them. It's not up to the Democrats anymore. That's the whole point.

Tony, Supervisor at Nubby's Number Factory reposted

This is really one of those "READ THE ARTICLE" moment. They want AI companies to use a dedicated API and PAY to get Wikipedia content instead of just scraping it as regular traffic. That's all.

Meanwhile, in a country that isn't a de facto vassal of the United States... Rare is the time that I say I wish Canada behaved more like the United Kingdom, but, just this once, you gotta give it to them.

BREAKING: Creating non-consensual intimate images will become a criminal offence in the UK from this week, the Technology Secretary has announced Story to follow.

The only plausible reason to continue using the harassment site is to placate our political overlords. Shameless capitulation from a shameless political party.

Luke LeBrun@lukelebrun.ca

Do Canadian MPs actually connect with the public on X? I looked at RTs and views for every tweet* sent by Liberal MPs yesterday Out of 46 tweets, 21 Liberal MPs racked up a combined 475 retweets 34% had zero RTs. Only 17% got more than 10 RTs 3 tweets accounted for over half of all engagement

Shit like this doesn't cut it. Using a platform is a form of support for said platform. You don't get to have it both ways. Leave the fascist slop-app and stop wasting my taxpayer dollars on having your posts throttled by a drugged-up billionaire.

“‘The Government of Canada takes reports of child sexual abuse material (SAM) and non-consensual sexual images very seriously,’ read a statement from Public Safety Canada. Evan Solomon, the minister responsible for AI regulation and safety in Canada, declined an interview request.”

Canada has always been a master of marketing. We're so good at lying to ourselves that we've transformed Merrie Canada into an (Anglo) national identity. The problem is that this starry-eyed branding makes reform challenging and expressing our troubles internationally almost impossible.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

According to this ranking, Canada’s reputation has improved since 2024. We are now the 2nd most reputable country in the world. The United States has dropped from 30th to 48th in that same year, the biggest drop of any nation BY FAR. Its reputation-peers are now Kuwait, Algeria, Kazakhstan…

"I demand a meeting with the people who have repeatedly lied to me" is an...interesting strategy. Chuckles and Carnage working on out-Quisling one another.

Ezra Levin ❌👑@ezralevin.bsky.social

This is *extremely* weak leadership from Jeffries and Schumer. When the wannabe king ignores congress to initiate regime change abroad, they are requesting a fucking briefing sometime soon.

Ronald Reagan was a monster who inflicted decades of suffering on the world. He was a conman and a liar. His regime is topped only by Trump's and Andrew Johnson's in terms of damage caused to the Union. Democrats need to keep Reagan in the cold, wet ground where he belongs.

Governor Newsom Press Office@govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov

The presidency once served as a reminder of our common humanity. Ronald Reagan described its purpose as building "a nation composed of good and decent people."

If you hoard, say, Nintendo Power magazines such that you can no longer navigate your living space, you are considered unwell and in need of treatment. If you hoard money, you're seen as a paragon of virtue and someone who needs to be taken seriously. Make it make sense (impossible challenge).

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

If you make a billion dollars — or $500 million or even $100 million dollars — and you keep trying to make more, then there is something seriously wrong with you. It's a mental illness akin to hoarding or drug addiction.

A country where the colonial governor has carte blanche because most votes mean nothing and the major parties are closed aristocracies is not a healthy country. People don't like Carney; they simply have no alternative. We'd rather bleed out than have our heads cut off.

Canadianroots@shannonpeel.bsky.social

Canadians are happy with the direction PM Carney is taking Canada If, like me, you want to help his vision for Canada come to fruition, get involved It will take volunteers and donors to keep him at the helm of Canada Contact either a Liberal MP or the Liberal Party of Canada #cdnpoli

Climate-related cartography: "so, are we like *screwed screwed* with this whole climate change thing?", because it is almost invariably followed by some iteration of "I don't buy that humans can really do that much to the climate, you know?".

Prof. Nicole Holliday@mixedlinguist.bsky.social

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

An added bit: if you're a kid and you don't adhere to these things, like I didn't, you're set up for a childhood of bullying. Solnit's "straitjacket with a gun" is foisted on the little ones from the jump.

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

People think "politics" is what you say, but politics is in fact how you wield power. In that sense, driving a car is one of the most profound ways to reveal what your actual politics are. How people drive reveals the sickness at the heart of our society: wanting power, but not responsibility.

Hemry, Local Bartender@bartenderhemry.bsky.social

It just needs to be way easier to lose your license and your car for reckless driving, because a few months of major societal disruption 5 years ago taught people that driving in such a way that kills others or themselves is nbd

Working at Starbucks in downtown Ottawa 15+ years ago to help stretch the money at the end of the month was a more physically and mentally exhausting job than my current one and it isn't close. And Starbucks is *designed* to be as seamless as possible!

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

"Sacrifices" for everyone except the wealthy and powerful. A more avowedly radical NDP promising a wealth tax could probably claw a lot of turf back once the elbows up crowd realizes that they got got by Mark Carney.

Paris Marx@parismarx.com

I missed the detail that Mark Carney ditched the luxury tax on private jets, yachts, and vehicles over $100,000 in the budget, though I also can’t say I’m surprised. The banker-in-chief is serving his Bay Street buddies.

I feel like doing "if you don't like LLMs you're bigoted" is a pale horse for the entire slop machine industry. This is the last stand of the desperate. For the record: no, you can't be bigoted towards a calculator, whether it calculates words or numbers.

⚡️🌙@dystopiabreaker.xyz

i’m completely serious when i say that much of the dismissive ai discourse on here fires the bigotry neuron

Holy shit is this guy washed. "You deserve better than dying" is about as inspiring a sentiment to rally around as cottage cheese. If the Democrats can't primary and turf this bum, they might as well walk themselves to jail.

Hakeem Jeffries@hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social

Republicans are forcing hospitals, nursing homes and health clinics to close. People will die. You deserve better.

The French took four tries to get to a modern republic. No shame in starting from scratch. True for both Canada and the United States.

Jared Yates Sexton@jysexton.bsky.social

The Supreme Court is illegitimate. Not just because it is stolen, and it is, and not because it is corrupt, and it is, but because it is wrong and it does not represent the interests of the people. We have to get comfortable with unchaining ourselves from tradition, norms, and decorum.
