Some authors are asking, can I decline a review that's a poor fit for my expertise if I owe reviews for my own submissions? Yes โ€” and doing so in good faith does not put your submission at risk. Read more below. #CHI2027

If you are questioning your expertise on a specific review request, reach out to the AC who invited you for that paper to ask what expertise they are expecting from you (i.e., why they invited you). It may be that they need a methods expert or a domain expert and you fit the bill.

Regardless, we ask that you respond to review invitations quickly so that we can get the required number of external reviewers in place.

Repeated or unjustified declines โ€” for example, declining every paper you're offered or ones in which an assessment of your prior publication record shows a good match โ€” may result in your own submission being desk-rejected under the Review Responsibility Policy.

Used honestly, though, declining a genuine expertise mismatch is simply the right thing to do, not a risk to your paper.

In most cases, declining a poorly matched paper will result in your being offered a replacement; completing that replacement fulfils your review responsibility for the slot. If we're unable to find a suitable replacement, the decline stands on its own and does not affect your submission's status.

The Program Committee does review declines to confirm the process is being used in good faith.

That said, "poor match" is not just about personal preference. The minimum qualifications policy expects reviewers to demonstrate awareness of research methods beyond their own specialisation, the ability to recognise the actual limits of their expertise, [...]

and a willingness to evaluate work within its own methodological context โ€” reviewing outside your immediate comfort zone is a normal and expected part of the role, not something you're entitled to opt out of generally.

Declining a review invitation when a paper is a genuinely poor match for your expertise is allowed under the Review Responsibility Policy, and not treated as a violation. You don't need to accept an assignment you're not equipped to review fairly, and you don't need special permission to decline.

CHI Meet-up submissions are open, due Thurs, 1 Oct 2026. Meet-ups are distinct from Workshops โ€” theyโ€™re informal, participant-driven social and networking gatherings centred around shared interests and community-building. For details, see: chi2027.acm.org/authors/meet... #CHI2027

Do you want to serve as a juror for CHI Workshops? If you meet the criteria below, apply to join us! Email workshops@chi2027.acm.org with your name, affiliation, CV, and a brief statement (~150 words) by Monday, Sep 28, 2026. See chi2027.acm.org/for-authors/... for info. #CHI2027 #CHI2027Workshops

Apply if you have one or more qualifications: - Significant involvement with CHI and/or CHI Workshops - Significant experience reviewing, selecting, and/or jurying technical contents for a SIGCHI-related conference - Regular participation at CHI and/or Workshops (author, presenter, and/or attendee)

1 day til the deadline: Do the final CHI 2027 submission check now. Resolve every warning, confirm the full author list and review-responsibility slots, and make sure your PDF and metadata are complete. Checklist: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #CHI2027

3 days til the deadline: Ask every co-author to confirm that their PCS account, ORCID, DBLP and reviewing expertise are up to date. Then check your paper descriptors, four review-responsibility slots and every red warning in PCS. Checklist: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #CHI2027

7 days til the deadline: Today is the recommended abstract deadlineโ€”a preparation checkpoint, not an official deadline. Check the red text at the top of your PCS submission and contact any co-authors who still need to add their ORCID or DBLP. Checklist: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #CHI2027

9 days til the deadline: Has your author team allocated all four review-responsibility slots to eligible authors? One author may fill more than one slot. If your team qualifies for an exemption, declare it in PCS. Checklist: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #CHI2027

11 days til the deadline: For submitting authors: Choose your paper descriptors carefully too (keywords section of the submission page). This will help match your paper with appropriate reviewers. Checklist: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #CHI2027

A timeline of tasks is available in the volunteer form, and you can check chipc.acm.org/2027/ for updated information on the review process. If you plan to submit to CHI 2027, please consider volunteering. Peer review only works when peers review. #CHI2027

CHI 2027 is implementing a new review process to handle the increasing number of submissions. We are seeking volunteers to lead the peer review process.

There are three roles (in addition to reviewers). Associate Chairs (ACs) assign reviewers (accessing a pool of qualified candidates) and synthesize review comments in a meta-review for a maximum of 15 papers.

Subcommunity Chairs (SCs) behave similarly to previous subcommittee chairs, managing 10-15 ACs and providing oversight of the process. Emergency Review Board Members (ERBs) provide external reviews for a range of topics in the final two weeks of the review cycle.

Congrats to Jon Froehlich, Jacki O'Neill, & Volker Wulf as the 2026 recipents of the #SIGCHI Societal Impact Awards for 2026 at #chi2026!

How to navigate CHI like a Pro! As part of our new Student Mentoring program, Elizabeth Churchill, Ferran Altarriba, and Yvette Wohn ran a panel to introduce everyone to CHI and help them make the most out of our massive program.

This year @sigchi welcomed 11 new CHI Academy members at #chi2026! Congrats to them all for driving our community forward!

Demos are one of the interactive highlights at any CHI! This year we hosted research from VR to taste to touch to tears...oh and a dinosaur.

Tamar Makin & Dani Clode gave us an amazing closing keynote on With, Not For: Rethinking the Body (and Brain?) in Augmented Interaction at #chi2026! Across neuroscience and design, they argue for a shift from imitating the biological body to working with it.

The #SIGCHI Lifetime Service Awards went to Cliff Lampe & Helena M. Mentis at #CHI2026! Many thanks to them for their dedication, endeavors, and mountains of work they do for our community.

Last month Pep Gatell gave the opening keynote at #chi2026 which included a great discussion on art and technology and people (along with some interactive surprises!).

between disciplines, between research and practice, between technical innovation and human values, between the communities we serve and the systems we create. Bridges are acts of intention that bring people together.

The CHI community, diverse in background and united in purpose, has itself been one of the most powerful bridges in our field.

Pittsburgh is a city shaped by reinvention: a former steel powerhouse transformed into a thriving hub, bridging technology, design, industry and the arts. In Pittsburgh, stunning architecture meets riverfront parks, world-class universities, and a bold spirit. We can't think of a more fitting home.

Inspired by Pittsburgh's iconic yellow bridges and CHI's enduring role in connecting people and technology, CHI 2027 invites our community to span the profound distances that face us today:

It has been a whirlwind of groundbreaking research, thought-provoking workshops, and invaluable networking. #CHI2026
