Hey folks, next Saturday the Sunset Park volunteer group I'm part of will be having their last tabling event in the park itself. Halloween treats for kids! Educational materials! Know Your Rights and tenant organizing handouts! Halloween /Dia De Los Muertos activities! 12p-4p, 44th & 6th Ave

Looking at the current AI hellscape reminds me of Eliza (an early chatbot pretending to be a therapist) and Raktor, (constructed grammatically correct but meaningless sentences sentences). There was no "there there," no mind behind the algorithms, but that didn't stop ppl from projecting.

Decades of money, energy and time were sloshed into the tech, and while it has produced some genuinely good stuff, it has by and large just created more ways to expropriate the digital commons from us.

We live in a world where AIbros want us to care about the welfare of "conscious" AI technology, while using said AI technology to murder and genocide actually conscious humans. This is how you know they don't actually care about anything except the valuation of their companies.

From Josh Helfgott: ICE detained a Los Angeles car washer and father of four for six months. His kids ended up in therapy, his family lost its income, and he is still fighting to stay in the country. José Padilla, 41, was detained by ICE on January 27 while he

Tomorrow ,come check out these three awesome writers who'll talk about cities as characters in speculative fiction, and read from their work!

Today marks the beginning of our trial against Rockstar to hold them accountable for firing workers who were trying to unionise. In order for us to see this through to the end, we need your support. Please donate to and share our fundraiser for the Rockstar 31: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/qr/wWq5Omj...

I really hate how the nationalists and warmongers and evangelicals pretend to care about what happened to New Yorkers on 9/11, while the rest of the time they look on us with either dripping distain (librul commie elites) or as another fungible resource to exploit

I hate 9/11 "anniversary week". I live in NYC, lived there on 9/11. People who were nowhere near here decided to thump their chests, launch us into endless wars that murdered millions, set up spy systems and border agencies that made Muslim Americans' (& ultimately all immigrants') lives much harder

Happy anniversary to Star Trek. Caught TOS in reruns. It was far removed from my life at the time. Where adults were sensible and solved problems with brains and insight (and yes sometimes fisticuffs). Where there was a promise of a better future. /1

All the Treks have built on each other from this point of view - that better things are possible - even when exploring darker themes. I love em all - the shows, the movies, comics, novels... It's a great universe to explore and we're better off for having it. /2

Unions gave us weekends, child labor laws, work day limits, overtime, and a host of other protections that businesses and their political sock puppets want to take away from us. Many of those unions were led by communists. So now does the 100+ year anti-commie propaganda in the US make more sense?

Finished Amitav Ghosh's amazing "River of Smoke," the second book in his Ibis Trilogy, a set of historical novels set just before/during the Opium War. The book is an amazing slow burn - full of details and observations of daily life in 1838/39 Canton. Melancholy,

I'm pretty convinced that AItechbros have never made a single thing with their own hands. There's such a joy to making something, however terrible the final result. That tactile interaction with the world is utterly missing in their vision of "endless compute."

Gary, Indiana is 77% percent Black. Thousands have been without power for nearly two weeks. Many are without safe water. Yet every data center is operational & using enormous amounts of both power and water. This is what oligarchy looks like. Everyone suffers so the 1% can make even more.

Begging people to learn some labor history. Hint: The Luddites weren't against technology, they were against how capitalists were destroying their livelihoods, violating labor laws, employing children, and wrecking their bodies. bsky.app/profile/spar...

The Left is deeply entwined with the arts and AI is doing for the artist what modern manufacturing did for the craftsman in the industrial revolution. This kind of reaction is thus both inevitable and doomed to failure.

Arday defending himself by filing a police complaint against Dave Harris - a man who had already been formally found to have engaged in bullying misconduct as far back as 1998 - is not something I find extraordinary. What is extraordinary is that Harris's misconduct vanished from news coverage.

I don't see enough mentions of the third rate turd who was among the loudest in the witch hunt against Arday. The turd's name is Nathan Cofnas, a eugenicist who was fired from his post for making outright racist remarks.

Last week's reading: Herbert Simon's "The Sciences of the Artificial," 3rd edition. A well-put together book arguing for a systematic study of human-created work. I've been hearing about Simon for a long time - his influence is broad (psychology, comp sci, economics, poly sci, design).
