Cézanne's Woman with a Parrot (c.1864) explores a motif that Courbet and Manet would later make famous. Small and brooding, it reflects his dark early style. Cézanne deeply admired Courbet's version and reportedly kept a photograph of it in his wallet.

The Manor House at Jas de Bouffan (1870) is a watercolor of the family estate near Aix that Cézanne's banker father bought in 1859. Having covered its salon walls with murals, he now painted the house itself as landscape.

Painted in 1865, Landscape in the Ile de France shows Cézanne’s Paris countryside in the somber tones of Courbet. Within a decade, the Impressionists would bathe this terrain in light — a shift Cézanne later absorbed through his work with Pissarro.

Bend in a Road in Provence (c. 1866) is often considered Cézanne's first large landscape. The composition is built from broad areas of paint smoothed with a spatula and foreshadows the Provençal landscapes that would come to define his career.

Chestnut Trees and Farmstead of Jas de Bouffan (1876) shows the family estate filtered through the Impressionist eye Cézanne developed with Pissarro. The chestnuts become columns framing the building, bringing nature and architecture into conversation.

Promenade (1871) places two figures in a landscape at the moment Cézanne's private life was shifting. He had recently begun his relationship with Hortense Fiquet — a bond he hid from his father for years, fearing the loss of his financial allowance.
