The journey of a magnet back to the surface 🧲 Here we see a 11.5 metres-long magnet weighing 23 tonnes, travelling underground, before being lifted 56 metres to the surface through the ALICE Experiment. Find out more about the road to #HiLumiLHC: home.cern/science/long...

In the third and last episode of “Particle Collisions”, we look inside the #LHC to see how the beams are structured and what determines how many collisions happen each second. 🔗 Watch the last episode here: youtu.be/Dv2VtmqI8Jw

In the second episode of Particle Collisions, we explore luminosity and cross-section, how they connect an accelerator to the physics it produces, and why particle physicists measure data in "inverse femtobarns". 🔗 Watch the second episode here: youtu.be/xX0K5daByv0

CERN and Mistral join forces to accelerate AI for science 💫 CERN, and Mistral have signed a statement of intent to establish a long-term strategic partnership focused on developing foundation models for scientific discovery. Read more: home.cern/cern-and-mis...

What happens after a particle collision takes place? Why do we need so many collisions? What can they tell us? In this three-part series, named “Particle collisions”, we address all these questions, and much more. 🔗 Watch the first episode: youtu.be/SqqLN0LgYdg

📢 Applications are now open for Grand Prix Resonance Artists and collectives based in Geneva are invited to submit proposals for a two-month residency #AtCERN, to expand their practice and develop a new artistic project in dialogue with the Laboratory’s scientific community.

CERN’s newest exhibition is opening to the public 💫 “Why? It matters.” is a free temporary exhibition that combines scientific content, objects, images, interactive displays, and audiovisual installations. Join us #AtCERN, starting tomorrow. 😉 🔗 Find out more: sciencegateway.cern/why

Beam tests boost #FCC detector technologies 🔬 The recent beam tests #AtCERN offered the first opportunity to evaluate two new calorimeter technologies under study for International Detector for Electron Accelerator (IDEA), both of which showed promise for future large-scale developments.

The tracker is scheduled to fly to the Space Station in 2027 aboard a SpaceX Cargo Dragon, where it will be installed on top of AMS using the ISS’s robotic arm. A series of spacewalks (EVAs) will be required to complete its mechanical and electrical connection to AMS.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a particle-physics detector attached to the outside of the ISS, searching for Dark Matter, #antimatter and missing matter. Here we see “Layer-0”, a new layer of silicon sensors which will be mounted on top of the AMS while it orbits Earth on the ISS.

From 28 June to 27 July, Layer-0 was hung from a robotic arm in CERN’s North Area undergoing final tests before spaceflight. Layer-0 measures the charge sign and momentum of charged particles and has been developed by the AMS collaboration #AtCERN as part of the upgrade of the AMS detector.

77 tonnes on the move 🚚 On 22 July, the 77-tonne JFSU-C, a shielding component used in the @atlasexperiment.bsky.social , was transported from the ATLAS cavern to Building 191 – the technical workshop and integration facility used for assembling and testing large components of the experiment.

There, the shielding will undergo robotic machining as part of the preparations for the High-Luminosity LHC (#HiLumiLHC) and it will be modified to make space for additional services before returning to ATLAS in April 2027. Find out more: home.cern/77-tonnes-of...
