🔻 Today's vote on #ChatControl 1.0 marks a disappointing step backwards. The European Parliament has approved the revival of the interim #ePrivacy derogation, despite having rejected a virtually identical proposal only a few months ago.

Protecting children online is a shared objective, but measures affecting the privacy and security of communications should be grounded in evidence, necessary, proportionate, and respecting fundamental rights.

With negotiations on the permanent #CSAM Regulation set to resume after the summer, we will continue to advocate for a durable legal framework that effectively combats child sexual abuse while safeguarding #encryption, #privacy, and other fundamental rights. 👇🏻 Read our full reaction:

cdt.orgReturn of Mass Scanning of Private Communications through Undemocratic ProcedureThe Evidence for Urgency is Lackingardising-the-long-term-framework" class="toc-anchor">Jeopardising the Long-term Framework re-is-specific" href="#the-timing-of-this-procedural-manoeuvre-is-specific"...

🔻 Today's vote on #ChatControl 1.0 marks a disappointing step backwards. The European Parliament has approved the revival of the interim #ePrivacy derogation, despite having rejected a virtually identical proposal only a few months ago.

“Reviving an already rejected law through an emergency procedure, timed for the last day before recess, is a questionable way of lawmaking, which risks undermining confidence in the democratic process itself.”, commented our Security & Surveillance Director, Rand Hammoud.

‼️ Today, MEPs will vote on whether to fast-track #ChatControl 1.0 back into law. The renewed push for an urgent procedure to reinstate the interim ePrivacy derogation follows an unprecedented intervention by Roberta Metsola, who urged the Council to move the file forward.

politico.euMetsola heads for clash with her own Parliament over child abuse billParliament president and EU countries are playing procedural politics to pass a law to scan internet services for child abuse material.

MEPs have already spoken on this. They should not be forced to vote again under a rushed procedure to get a different answer. This move raises political and democratic concerns, adding to the already well-documented legal, technical, privacy and security risks the proposal entails.

The fight against #CSAM is vital, but it cannot justify undermining privacy, security, freedom of expression, or the democratic mandate of the Parliament. We urge MEPs to uphold the March decision and reject both the urgency request and the text it would fast-track.
