someone a lot smarter than me should write a book on how this recent push for "parental control" and "age verification" features in our technology is codifying a very specific kind of legal doctrine of parental ownership into our everyday lives

apple says "every child is different" and specifies parents will have granular control over every setting but they still provide defaults with restrictions and forward your child's age range to apps through an API. the child must always be externally controlled in some way

it's also shifting blame imo. if your kid watches/plays/does bad stuff on their phone, it's your fault, cause look at all the controls you have! there's no way apple, or roblox, or youtube could be at fault

The underlying problem with having a "nuanced opinion on trans athletes" is that the status quo was already the nuanced view (typically a certain period on hormones, usually years post transition, decided on a sport by sport basis BY their awarding bodies), critics don't actually want that.

With the Oblivion remaster taking up the hype cycle, it's probably a good time to re-up that the Palestinian-led BDS movement has asked for a boycott of Microsoft's gaming products due to the company's ongoing and enthusiastic technical support for the IDF's ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Youtubers will go like "what if there was a video game that wanted to torture you personally in real life and make you suffer" and then cover some obtuse indie roguelike with tricky mechanics rather than the obvious candidate, league of legends

this app makes me think about UX a lot. its biggest supporters seem to be mostly people with big followings, because the algorithm allows them to have a more closed less hostile community, and most of the criticisms I've heard are from regular people who find the browsing experience to be suboptimal

I think we need to admit most people like algorithms. tiktok hit the masses like a truck because it had a stunningly good algorithm, and, if I'm being honest, twitter's algorithm (AND NOTIFICATION FILTERING) are what keep me there. I've gotten very used to the process of curating an algorithmic feed

if there's a big issue with algorithms it's one of literacy. people don't really understand how they're interacting with things, and how that encourages these nebulous systems that are purposefully kept away from scrutiny. the facebook gen Xers here are a great example of that lacking literacy

diet soda is mania imposed on us by the tyranny of diet culture. put the sugar back in my drink, if I wanted to drink something healthy I'd pick something other than brown chemical sludge
