As someone who enjoys playing druids, I almost loved this movie. But its morality is kinda incoherent. We gotta respect and listen to nature, but it will kill you so we also need to control it. War is bad unless we really need it. You gotta learn to let go except when it's correct not to

And it commits the typically fantasy sin of race essentialism (brian jacques/tolkien/wind in the willows), which wouldn't be super noteworthy except The Chronicles of Narnia, from which the tale borrows much of its bones, does not commit this sin. A shame, because the magic is all so awe inspiring

That all said, the film is cleanly anti imperialism, at least. Perhaps the message isn't meant to be about the themes of nature or war, but rather motivations and control, which I do think works, but it gets in its own way a bit.

Which is a shame, because again I almost loved this movie. It's truly gorgeous. But it's not an anti war film--like other anti war war movies it shows the horrors of the battlefield, but not of the victims. The perspective is from the combatants, and you're meant to root and cheer

It's not unabashedly pro nature in the way that Fern gully is. Nature is not worth protecting in and of itself, but rather to use for our benefit and deny to evil doers so they don't use it to hurt people.

And despite having a fantastic evil villain, it refuses to just let it be a villain, and the final confrontation has to have one last conversation about their motivations and how there's something we can all relate to going on there like pls fuck off and kill hitler already

I think it's a sin writers make when they need to have everything be nuanced to the detraction of story and message, the end result is they start humanizing hitler Fern Gully is a counter example of a film with some of the same themes that still has complex characters but + a strong moral coherency

Love the Trek character and the first ability is solid but the transfer doesn't work for me at all, flavor-wise. A discarded creature wasn't even alive, and a couple stagnant +1+1 counters don't scream "Dax" to me. Maybe a death trigger or some kinda creature tutor.

Our beloved old friend. Jadzia was such a cool character and this card design is hella lit. (revealed via www.bilibili.com/opus/1263004...) #MagicTheGathering

Oh I like this. Make her a 0/0 that starts with a +1+1 counter, and when another creature comes into play you can move all of her counters over This fits that the surgery doesn't 100% require patient death too, but it's rare and takes some work to enable

It also prevents Dax from being stagnant, but rather gets to grow and evolve with the host. As with graft, dealing with the trigger online would be annoying though

The pile of broken decking on the ground there was my attempt to make a shim, but that can only raise it 1/2 inch because that's the height the bottom trim can cover

Good news is I got a lot of posts installed and that's going a lot faster now that I've given up on through bolting and switched to grks

After a long day of jimmying I have come to the conclusion that the post plastic thingy you screw into isn't high enough for my stair railing (most other brands can adjust). So I ordered more plastic thingys and will try again in November Plenty of other rail to install in the meantime.

"I admire your honesty" is just about the most diplomatic response possible to this cretin

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

One of my favorite games. Lotta great little moments. Excellent message and vibes. Perfect pick me up for when the crushing weight of fascism is getting you down

As a Halloween treat, Small Saga is currently 20% off on the Switch and PC.

Stair progress. Spent several hours panicking because I'd planned to leave the risers open but Madison code requires no gaps larger than 4 inches in case a baby gets wedged in there. So I'm using scraps from elsewhere in the deck and leaving a crack along the bottom

I was down on myself for not just springing for some fascia board. Would save time + look cleaner. Wife pointed out the last deck stairs had exposed nails and they were disintegrating beneath our feet, and I should "be nice to my husband!"

Not sure if the artist painted Picard at a "Dutch angle" or if it was later shifted to make it more "action-y," but aesthetically, it displeases me. Picard is the ultimate 90⁰ angle, a straight-line that would iron his underwear before putting it on. He's the anti-Kirk. Hey, I have niche hang-ups.

One of the sickest Gearhulk decks I've seen Did get the Devoted Druid combo off for a fast kill Note that Formidable Speaker and LED is not a combo

The matchups I'm least confident about are Jar vs BLotus Control (Lotus has a few key cards that could swing it if they show up fast) and Jar vs Academy (I think Academy looks better/more consistent but also Megrim hoses the win lol)
