OBAMA: Remember that whole thing about drain the swamp? The only thing that got drained. was the reflecting pool after some no-bid contract got it all messed up. And then they tried to blame a 3 time Olympian by claiming he vandalized it.

Pretty happy with how this turned out for a first attempt. This is the International Space Station crossing in front of the Sun as shot with a Seestar S50. I did some processing using Python scripts to shift color to "natural." Here is the composite image of the frames from the crossing. #Seestar

If confirmed this is not only unsurprising but highly illuminating… the hateful traffic would appear to be mostly driven by Putin essentially psyoping the Western nations.

Have to admit I'm impressed by this little telescope and how easily it captures things in the night sky. This is Supernova 2026aaiv, which appears to be a white dwarf that detonated, briefly outshining all of the NGC 7331, the galaxy that contains it, about 47 million light years from Earth!

A timelapse of last night's lunar eclipse. I did 'stabilize' the image by aligning all the frames so the moon remained centered since tracking wasn't perfect. I hope you’ll forgive the fact that I was new this and kept adjusting the exposure and gain to try to see the eclipsed part of the moon.

Peter's Law of Chatbot Accuracy*: "everything you read that's produced by an LLM is absolutely true, except for the rare output about which you happen have expert knowledge". *Remixed from Knoll's Law of Media Accuracy, where the exact same rules apply!

AI is a normal tech. That means there are times when it is useful and times when it is pointless or actively harmful. One rule of thumb for chatbots is that they can only provide useful information to experts who have the discernment to ignore the defective output that LLMs *always* emit. 60/

Ugh! And I blew a tire on my bike 3.5 miles from home and forgot the patch kit. Had to walk home. Luckily that was when it was 10 degrees cooler this morning. Not forgetting my patch kit again…

We have a president who took the nation into a war for reasons he could not articulate, without a strategy for how to respond if and when Iran flexed its control over the Strait of Hormuz, and without an exit strategy if Iran doesn’t surrender. Trump is cornered, and he’s going stark-raving mad.

I just filled out the form in my own words, because we MUST take a stand against these partisan attacks on science. I urge everyone who follows me here to do the same. If you love science, then please help us protect it. I attached a screenshot of what I wrote. 🧪 🔭

OMB proposed new rules that would let political appointees, not scientists, decide which research gets funded in the U.S. But we can stop this if enough people share why peer-reviewed science is important to them. We made it easy for you to tell your story. The deadline to submit is July 13th.

First night playing with the Seestar S50. I am stunned at how simple it is to use this, just level it, focus it, tell it what to photograph). These three shots were done over the course of 75 minutes.

Scientific American is 180 years old. The most eminent science magazine for the general public. And today, sold off as scrap to stop the staff from unionizing. Many top editors I've worked with for a decade on several articles have been fired. What a disgrace @sciam.bsky.social

This is one of the most fulfilling conferences I go to, a chance to get caught up with what is the state-of-the-art in scientific computing... and the logo of the laser loon for this year's conference is excellent! If you are involved in scientific computing, you should really consider attending!

SciPy Conference 2026@scipyconf.bsky.social

🎉 Less than one month until #SciPy2026! 👉️ ti.to/scipy/scipy2... When people ask what SciPy is, it's tempting to say it's a conference about Python for scientific computing. But SciPy has always been much more than that.

Wow. Iran gets sanctions relief, the release of frozen funds, the ability to export oil, and a $300 billion reconstruction fund. The U.S. gets a reiteration of the vague promise Iran won’t develop a nuke. Hard to imagine a more thorough capitulation.

Yes, scientists can be hostile to new ideas. So should you Have you ever presented a new scientific idea, only to have it dismissed or dunked on by an actual scientist. There's a good reason for that, and they're probably in the right. bigthink.com/starts-with-... #astro #physics #space #crackpot

Wow. Trump is in so very far over his head. The Iran War is a generational blunder. After expending so many munitions, we are in a much worse position than before. Trump gave Iran a reason and an opportunity to seize the global economic chokepoint. And he hasn’t stopped it from getting nukes.

I must admit I'm enjoying his "I'm the best at not having dementia, nobody has less dementia than me" phase. Maybe we can trick him into ending the Iran war with a sudoku.

Trump on his cognitive test: "It had a question like, 'pick a number, sir, any number.' Okay. 203. 'Multiple by 9. Divide by 2. Add on 1,324. Subtract 1,292. Sir, multiply it out one more time by 19. What is the answer, sir?' I got it right."

I’ve never seen anything as weak as Hegseth’s need for constant affirmation. The American military (the Navy in particular) has more than a century of history of red-team testing of plans; wargaming; & criticizing itself. Hegseth on the other hand needs an unending attaboy or he crumbles like this.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hegseth: "Our press are just like these Pharisees. Your politically motivated animus for President Trump nearly completely blinds you from the brilliance of our American warriors."

This actually explains a problem I was having a few weeks ago with my office Mac suddenly losing connectivity.

Yeah, fascinating that they do seem to be the people who can never “read the room.” Picking this moment to announce you are gutting NASA because you need to pay for a war no one wants is stupid. Not that it will matter, it’s not like they actually care about what the little people think.

Tina Smith@smith.senate.gov

The political calculations that result in cutting NASA funding the day after the Artemis II launch must be fascinating
