I‘m definitely in this picture

Mike Knell@blat.at

Rather astonishingly, this was 20 years ago this very day. Tag urself - I'm the handsome and alarmingly young-looking dude in the front looking extremely pleased with himself.

Introduce yourself as what almost killed you: Teenage new-driver ignorance leading me to take a sharp curve in the road at the speed limit with cruise control on. It taught me that if you are going to total dad’s new car, do it so spectacularly that he’s just glad you’re alive

Introduce yourself as what almost killed you: Either falling asleep at the wheel (untreated at the time sleep apnoea) or a combination of cellulitis & lymphedema on my leg!

The morning after the massive heatwave has broken and I could swear that even the people of Vienna are going to break out in song.

WHYYYYYYYY is there still not an English (or German) translation of Yahya of Antioch?! It makes it so hard to give this to students, and it's such a good source.

And what a fine workshop it was!

Our PI @tla.bsky.social and George Bruseker (TAKIN.solutions) presented PWRo, a reusable ontology developed for the RELEVEN database to model power, authority and social relations in historical prosopography, at the 2nd Prosopon Workshop in Munich last week.

A meal almost but not entirely unlike Thanksgiving dinner. I can’t decide whether to brave my substitute for cranberry sauce.

We're hiring! @univie.ac.at is seeking a TT Assistant Professor in the Psychology of Digitalization. If your work is about automation, AI, or immersive technology (e.g., VR) in the context of work and organizations (broadly defined), we’d love to hear from you. 👇

Time was, you contributed to an edited collection or resource and got a free copy of the thing. Now you get three months of free access to the online version. Somehow it's just not the same...

I managed to get all the way to this many years old before having to go through my prose and murder Oxford commas to conform to a stylesheet. It hurts.

Everyone is very welcome - we have a really exciting paper line-up!

Final highlight: our P.I. @tla.bsky.social gave a talk in the "From Medieval Sources to Big Data" panel titled: "That's just, like, your opinion, man": Historical Consensus and Disagreement as Structured Data. (and yes, that's a Big Lebowski quote 😄)

Today's fresh academic hell is having to sit through a customer service online chat in order to be able to release an accepted paper for publication without having to pay many thousands of pounds. #latestagecapitalism

Flying from Vienna to Amsterdam on Austrian, but really Air Baltic. Had to check to make sure it was the right flight…

There are few things so heartwarming as going to look in the library catalogue for a book you edited and finding a bunch of glowing reviews you never realised were written.

Since dealing with life and the kids' school was too stressful and crazymaking for me to arrange flu vaccines for them, guess what the 6yo has now?

On this note, I wish DH moved away from abstract towards full paper submission, because declaration of intentions are complicated to deal with and lead to paper with potentially unfair evaluation because it was hard to evaluate "promises" or space limited proposals.

I said this a few days ago in the context of GenAI, but having now (finally!) started my #dh2025 conference reviews, we need to move to full papers. It is harder and harder to rate evaluation, significance, methodology, etc. when the author has max 1500 words. (1/2)

Tara A@byzantini.st

Maybe it's time for DH to move to full-paper-submission formats instead of abstract-submission...

When they have to include all that to be judged on (and remember references!) calling it an "abstract" is laughable. Why not give them the space, do a real evaluation, and let it be a real publication?
