I’m a different Brian Thompson from the health insurance CEO who famously passed away in an act of vigilante justice. I write fiction (for the page) and comedy (for stage, screen, and audio). brianthompy.substack.com

Can’t wait to take my young son to this movie about one of his cartoon hero Batman’s scariest super villains! Hahaha, I know it’s silly but he loves this stuff because he’s a baby.

Many years ago, when the regular teacher came down with diarrhea, Joe substitute taught a sketch writing class I took. I thought he did pretty well considering the tragic circumstances.

I’m teaching a TV writing class at Script Anatomy that starts Sunday Nov 1st! 5 sessions. Tell your friends but only if you want them to really like you. Class and sign up info here: scriptanatomy.com/product/2026...

I’m looking forward to reading this book. Recently I watched Serling’s post-Twilight Zone western series The Loner (all episodes on YouTube and looking great). Lloyd Bridges clops around the west killing people because he’s sad about the civil war. Good stuff!

It's pub day for Serling: A Journey Into The Twilight With with TV's First Visionary! If you're still on the fence, I've got an entire chapter — about Rod's service in World War II — available as a free sample:

There is a type of man who walks around with a big cup of crushed ice and rattles it around and tilts his head back and pours it into his maw and chomps it and this is the type of man I would like to be.

In the past two weeks, I’ve had two short stories accepted in very good literary journals. I’m happy about this, but mostly because one is about Art Bell and the other features an erotic encounter between an elderly man and Mariah Carey.

I, an LA resident, woke up this morning to hear the president wants Iran to kill me. But I saw the clip and it seems clear this isn’t what he meant. He was saying Iran could have taken out LA and San Diego, so the cost of the war is a “small price to pay.” Who cares either way, I guess.

I had to sprinkle snake repellent around my house due to seeing a snake (lesson: never stop renting) and it smells really good. Put a dish of this stuff in your powder room and your guests will love it unless they’re snakes.

Life gets better when you finally block that guy who does nothing but post Trump photos and clips. Turns out I don’t need to know when he falls asleep or how weird his hair looks every hour of every day.

The Last Samurai had the misfortune of coming out from a crappy publisher the same year as both Kavalier & Clay and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. DeWitt’s book is the best of the three, but, as the new author’s afterword suggests, she herself is a bit of a screwball (complimentary).

For my money I'm not sure there's a more cathartic or awesome line in fiction than Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" shouting, "Fill your hand, you son of a bitch," just before he charges at Lucky Ned Pepper and three bandits with his horse's reins in his teeth

Why has everyone reading in public only just started their book? Last night, I went to the Star Trek IV / City on the Edge of Forever double feature. The man sitting in front of me was reading a thick French edition of Proust's In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower, but he was only on page 10.

Audience pretty evenly divided between laughs and groans when Kirk explains Spock's ears to a 20th century policeman by saying Spock is Chinese and got his ears caught in a rice picker. Proust man, however, was silent.

Really interesting how AI discourse so effectively rips the masks off of the world’s dimwits and numbskulls.

We use the term futureshock in my friendgroup to describe the bottomless disorientation that we experience when we see these things do something new that didn't previously seem possible. I'll probably never forget the first time I loaded up claude code.

By writing 100 Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez was a symbol of great novel writing. But today, upon completion of my manuscript 200 Years of Solitude, I'm the greatest of all time. Thank you.

What an odd turn of events that being unreasonably angry about Disney decanonizing the Star Wars EU is now right wing coded. If you‘re obsessed with Ulic Qel-Droma, it’s a dogwhistle.

To be clear, I believe Mr. Vance should be in prison for writing a book called Communion without a Gray alien on the cover. But I'll be darned if I'm going to chastise someone for joking about 9/11.

Love to joke about the 25th anniversary of the worst terror attack in American history.

The only time this kind of thing has ever been acceptable is when I went to a screening of Willow and asked Ron Howard if he’d direct my screenplay for a Willow / Beastmaster crossover called Willow 2: Through the Portal of Time.

1. So, at the Worldcon this year there was a person who was going from panel to panel, bothering panelists by trying to get them to "collaborate" with them on a project and sliding the proposed project to them on a piece of paper. Folks, I cannot stress to you how obnoxious this sort of thing is.

970 days since the Titan Submarine went missing, but the search continues! Praying for everyone on board 🙏

I have seen this film roughly 7000 times because as a teenager I helped build a Cinemark multiplex and we used a print of Knock Off to calibrate the projector and sound in each theater.

Famously the theater where I walked out of the film Madame Web. Not because of the film but because when I got up to buy some popcorn they had closed the nearest concession stand and I didn’t want to go upstairs.

So happy to see one of my favorite children's book characters, the Green Lantern, in a violent True Detective ripoff instead of something my child can watch.

The Odyssey predates the modern concept of character. Changing his actions can’t really soften him, since he’s not really a character who could be softened. Only in adaptation does he become a “type of guy” and therefore has to act like a person rather than a series of actions. (Caveat: I’m dumb.)

James@gravitysra1nbow.bsky.social

If I’ve a complaint about the Odyssey it’s honestly that Nolan softens Odysseus way too much. He has Hector’s infant baby thrown off the walls of Troy and hangs all of his maids. He’s definitely not the type of guy to tell Penelope that she can remarry.

Counterpoint: I recently took a rare trip to east Los Angeles and encountered on a single afternoon upward of four different 40+ year old men wearing Minions bucket hats.

there are all kinds of reasons the MCU is in decline—bad films, streaming TV dilution, boring multiverse nonsense—but the biggest is simply that the target audience through the 2010s are all now in their 30s and 40s, which means we're, y'know... actual adults
