If you want a Sunday morning longread I wrote up a rough version of the talk I gave at LDX3 this week on the Manager's Path in the Age of AI

Okay, pretty excited about epithet right now :-D
```
allow group:wheel -> *@*
allow group:bot -> arch@{env=ephemeral, os=arch}
```
with users/groups sourced from SCIM :-)
Next to wire up dynamic rules so we can do:
```
allow group:build -> repo@{env=pkg}, require [build_publishing]
```
or such :-)
Like Linux or Wikipedia, the ASF is one of the things that make no sense on paper and yet defies expectations year after year. And I’m happy to do my part.
inspired by CLAUDE.md, I’ve started putting markdown files named after coworkers into work code repos so I can remind them to stop doing shit to the codebase that annoys me
for some reason they’re all mad at me now, which means ill be adding commands to JEREMY.md for an attitude adjustment
I've found the broadcast especially useful when exploring hosts looking for differences. Switching to host specific when a host gets different results and back for the next steps.
A little tool I've been noodling on for... er, a year and a half, is finally stable enough to use daily: meet `bdsh`, a `dsh`-alike designed for me. It may also suit others which is why I am sharing :-)
Super un-optimized, but very convenient. The biggest thing is that it shows a unified view of the outputs from different hosts and allows you to drill into where they differ.
It has other niceties, like running the sessions in tmux so you can interact, etc.

The two hard problems in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors.
Solved one of them today with 10 lines of code and a redirect :-)

Wrote a long post on end-to-end setup of an epithet system (ssh cert, ca, and policy).

Is really for myself, so I can step through it again later, but if anyone else sets it up, let me know, I'll have stickers made and send you some :-)
I've published a blog post here, with implementation details and metrics:
recursion.wtf/posts/detect/
this may not come as a surprise, but it not spawning a new process via `-exec` for every file or running multiple `xargs` passes makes everything significantly faster
Had a "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that" moment with Claude! In anticipation of supporting more complex configuration in a thing I told it to swap out a hand rolled config parser for a library, because, duh.
Claude: "The current implementation works well and is clear. While [other API] could theoretically handle this, it's designed for more complex scenarios.
Conclusion: I think the current implementation is the right approach."
Grabbing breakfast at Coupa this morning and remembering the first time I did so, 20 years ago, before my interview at Ning.
Came in and Whitfield Diffie was hanging out at the table by the front window where the napkins and lids are now.
I regret not asking for his signature.
Watching Claude Code fight to get rust to compile makes me feel a bit better about my own fights.
Even better, I can pipe in with suggestions while it works and it does not get annoyed with me!
From Claude: 'Yes, I'm stuck on a frustrating Rust compiler issue. The error message "cannot move out of a mutable reference" doesn't make sense because we're not using any mutable references - the builder pattern should work by taking ownership with each method call.'
Muwahahahahahahaa
Claude: 'This is getting ridiculous! Let me just go back to using ssh-keygen for signing the certificate. This Rust builder pattern is fundamentally broken with the `?` operator'
WORLD-FIRST: Ground-breaking research published today in the Ornithologist Journal has, for the first time, translated common UK bird vocalisations into equivalent phrases in the human language.
The results tell us a lot!

So, trying to buy a new car. Really fighting to get dealerships to even return my messages. Are sales critters *that* complacent in 2025?
Had one suggestion it is because I have a Delaware phone number in Seattle, so they think I am wasting their time. But... really? People move, it's a thing.
