Reminder that there a NWSL game with @reignfc.com Nov 1 days before the election where WA has a hateful measure attempting to not only harm trans girls but scare cis girls from participating in sports. Come to the match. Stand in the supporter section and drive out these bigots if they show up.

Jason Anderson@jasondcsoccer.bsky.social

Anti-trans bigots are coming to NWSL games looking to provoke violence or other incidents that could go viral. This is the back-up plan: harass and endanger anyone who stands up to them. NWSL is going to have to contend with this. Kicking the can down the road will put too many fans at risk.

Replying to @ericacbarnett.bsky.social

This is, sadly, a pretty typical Seattle council meeting on homelessness. An overwhelming majority of public speakers explain why a how a proposed new punitive policy will harm homeless people. Supporters of the legislation display listening faces or don't, then vote for the legislation.

If @historians.org thinks grad students aren't paying attention to this they are wildly misinformed. This is not an organization that students or early career scholars should give an ounce of money, time, or credence to.

In this explosive follow up to the story about the American Historical Association's use of DC lobbyists to silence AHA member Palestine advocacy, we have this: AHA is conducting a witchhunt of its Council. Loyalty oaths. Lawyers. Threats. Authoritarian behavior. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

if you don’t keep up with the youth i want you to know they’ve renamed “tramp stamps” to “cake toppers” which feels like the first advancement for feminism in a long time

I'm presenting at an academic conference soon and it's on a newish paper and I'm nervous about it. When I mentioned that to classmates, people in years ahead of me, they told me not to stress and I can just 'wing it' or 'phone it in' because it doesn't really matter. Which YES, fully agree, but...

Which is why I am so consistently mad about people asking or telling me to integrate AI tools into my research. The reification of an Indiana Jones understanding of what history is/can be shuts down serious work WITH communities outside of normative archive models.

Ppl pushing for "efficiency" in our research through AI forget that our work is supposed to be slow, thoughtful and in collaboration with other scholars and often community. Only University Admins want it to go faster-its against our interest as workers, and people with ethics to give it into it.

I'm an environmental historian of the PNW who focuses on Indigenous sovereignty through fishing and fishing lifeways. The paper is on the politics of early 20th ctry salmon licensure and a Vancouver Island First Nations response to enclosure.

I can't phone that in, I can't treat it like it doesn't matter. I'm not saying other people's work is more blase or less important but every time I present I have to do as if people from the community are going to be in the room. It's the only ethical way to present my work.

I have been paid finally, but I still don't have insurance and apparently my insurance lapsed for some unknown reason before I realized- so now I'm getting bills. I'm going to staple them all to the door of the deans office.

I've been informed my paycheck is coming on the 14th. The quarter started on Sept 30th, I have an exam scheduled for tomorrow. This University has literally no trouble turning off my transit access the last day of the quarter but can't figure out how to pay me...and my insurance is still lapsed.

This! The whole "it's everywhere" thing is true for sure. But like set your browser to duck duck go and don't use the AI features offered you and really it disappears quite quickly.

Bradford Pearson@bradfordpearson.bsky.social

This is kinda a throwaway line in an otherwise fine Times story but...I don't think it's true? I can't think of a single way that AI has affected my personal life, other than the fact that I have to hear about it nonstop.

Fred is one of the nicest and best "free range" scholars out there. Very excited to get my hands on the new book.

Author Frederick L. Brown joined The Animal Turn podcast to discuss how municipal archives helped him write his more-than-human history of Seattle—and to share a preview of BIRDS OF HOME, his new book on songbirds in North America, coming April 2027. 🎧: www.theanimalturnpodcast.com/s9-history/s9e6

The relative media silence on MLS and NWSL responses to pro-Palestine messaging from supporters starting in 2023- last min conduct policy changes, increased surveillance of fans, physical attacks on supporters from security and match bans- is a part of how MLSis able to pull this shit now.

This week's column is about the misguided insistence on pretending that sports is some safe haven from reality outside of its stadiums, a neutral area where politics don't exist. Column @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/football/202...

can’t believe OpenAI had someone on staff who thought it was appropriate to record everything that people around him said

CNN@cnn.com

OpenAI discovered a “sophisticated recording device” in one of its offices planted by an employee who has been arrested, the company said. https://cnn.it/4dDnIxJ
