More courage in this mother than all the masked ICE goons combined.

Oliver Willis@owillis.bsky.social

just heartbreaking stuff Alex Pretti's mother calls out ICE and the Trump administration for killing her son and smearing his name, and calls for justice to be done.

It’s important to remember that the Men in Black was an independent agency and wouldn’t be constitutional under current Supreme Court precedent. The Constitution is not a suicide pact.

Today is the official release date for my new book, First Among Equals: Visions of Equality before Egalitarianism. It explores how and why “equality” became, rather suddenly, a basis on which ordinary men and women could make political demands in early modern England. Please, check it out!

Fundamentally, we are where we are: the government is run by malicious morons. What’s the solution for the problem we have right now?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "I see what Abdul El-Sayed says about the war in Iran. I see him criticizing decisions the president has made, the military has made. But fundamentally we are where we are.I'd like to know what's Abdul El-Sayed's solution for the problem we have right now? It's easy to criticize"

Introduced my son to Independence Day today. One of my favorite parts is when they cut to the Russian pilots getting ready to fight the aliens, and the main musical theme reprises in a minor key as a Soviet-style march. It’s the details that make a classic.

I don’t know about these settler guys. Seems bad, maybe we should not let them do whatever they want forever

Bill Grueskin@bgrueskin.bsky.social

“Videos of the attack, verified by The Times, show that the photographer, Heidi Levine, 63, who was wearing body armor with large press tags, was trapped behind the settlers. They began to beat her with bats and sticks, kicking her as she was prostrate on the ground” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/16/w...

The untold (and obviously, most important) story here is that many classic parkland golf courses have been on a craze lately of cutting down their trees and pretending to be Scottish links courses, which is both gauche and un-American, send skeet.

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social

BREAKING: Trump administration cut down more than 500 trees on Saturday at the East Potomac Golf Course after giving less than a full-day notice, with more tree-cutting planned, so plaintiffs challenging the effort went to court seeking a TRO tonight. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

And too often we act as though all legal judgments are criminal ones

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

“Too often we act as though legal judgments and ethical ones must be the same,” Helen Lewis argues of the Cornell rape case: What happened that night might not satisfy a criminal standard of proof, but, “to use an old-fashioned word, it was wrong.” theatln.tc/hFjIPlq7

It’s striking that the GOP has a massive cash advantage even when Trump is currently causing lasting harm to the US and global economy. What does that say about the interests of capital?

I like how Mike Collins just acts like he’s writing something very important down while Ossoff rips him to shreds.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Ossoff: "If John Lewis were marching today from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club"

Yale Law School should have enrolled at least one more foreigner so as not to waste a spot on this moron.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."

Say what you will, but this is quite the backdrop for a presidential launch speech, especially at a time when the right is constantly classics-maxxing. Too bad the man is rizzless.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

this Rubio speech feels a lot like a 2028 soft launch

It remains a problem (as it was after 10/7 in 2023) that some fringe parts of the pro-Palestinian camp are incapable of recognizing, or hostile to, grief and mourning for the death of Israeli civilians.

Is Russ Vought going to bomb Los Angeles?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump shouts out Russ Vought and then says, ominously, "we have some big surprises coming up in a few weeks, right Russ? He's gonna be one of the important people in the history of our country."

What a choice cultural moment for the NYT to keep publishing Jeffrey Toobin—surely one of the only people who could write a column about the Supreme Court.

If you think the unitary executive theory is driven by originalism, you haven’t been reading the relevant scholarship on the topic.

“The disaster being created by today’s conservative justices isn’t motivated by a liking for Trump’s personal style of governance. It’s driven by their blind adherence to the foolish dogma of originalism.” —Noah Feldman

Don’t be a hyperventilating resistance lib and read anything at all into Hegseth’s “department of war” creating a “FASCOM.”

One of the key takeaways from Bill Gates’ interview with Ezra Klein is that Bill Gates has a really irritating personality. Also, AI may kill hundreds of millions of people, but that’s old news.
