my stats update is all broken and confused, because the NBA has somehow listed Devin Booker as playing for both the Suns and the Thunder last night, with him listed as scoring 1 point in 0 minutes for OKC

my updater handles it now, but they still haven't fixed it! I wonder how long his point for OKC will last. They'll print out his Hall of Fame plaque and the dude won't know that Booker didn't play for the Thunder for one game, scoring a free throw against his teammates www.nba.com/stats/player...

(why do I have better referential integrity checks than the NBA? Get on your game NBA, I have a list of errata available for you if you want it)

the Bulls announcers are searching for anything to say while the Celtics lead by 35 with 5 to go. Bill Cartwright just listed every state and country he has relatives in

So far this season, Luka is using a _lot_ more possessions than anybody else. Interesting to see LaMelo using 5% fewer possessions than he did last year too, curious to see if that'll hold up

I made a bunch of improvements to the rotation chart, which now shows both teams and a score difference chart between them. I'm still not super happy with the style of the line on the difference chart, but making improvements little by little. billmill.org/nba/rotation...

If you're using the data I currently publish in that repo directly: it's going to be removed soon! Storing the data in the repo itself is getting super painful to work with, so I moved it all to a CDN. I hope (and think?) that this is not going to mess up many people

you may not like it, but this is what peak sports data visualization performance looks like

Had a lovely round of disc golf (my new obsession) this morning at Ledgewood Pass. This was the most fun hole, a short one over a ravine, and i also saw this hoppy boy that let me get up close

Im in Oslo on a family vacation and got to play disc golf at one of the top courses in the world this morning. Played awful but had a lot of fun

I can't decide whether I like rooting against England or Duke more, they're both such enjoyable hate-watches

I have a neighbor that sparks up at 4 PM every day right outside my office window It's a little annoying? But good on you for finding your chill I guess

My brother asked me about average world cup squad heights, so I could hardly help myself. Turns out that Netherlands vs. Japan is only the 7th largest height differential game we'll see in the group stages; Bosnia vs Qatar is the largest

I’ve watched every game the US has played in the World Cup since 1994, and that was easily the most dominant and comfortable they’ve ever been

I ran a test of container file system performance on Mac OS by the simple expedient of measuring `npm install` with a cold cache. github.com/llimllib/con... Orbstack did shockingly well, paying basically no performance tax whatsoever for running in a container. I've not previously used it

It's far from a perfect test - the results depend heavily on the network, for example - but I think the results are consistent and well-separated enough to be convincing to myself at least. They also align with my prior biases, so they must be correct, right?

But I suppose I'll be giving it a try. Apple's container framework does somewhat better than colima, but you pay a pretty heavy performance tax to use either. This aligns with my experience - dev work with either of them is slow in node, python, or rust, where large dependency folders cause

on a visualization level: sometimes simple is best nit: I wish the NEJM put the title on the graph image, not just as a caption, they ought to know that the graphs get shared around as images. Good job on the scale in the axis label though in the PDF, they include it below the graph, which is fine

interaction, though a bit weird. Unbelievably quick response to what is a reasonably tricky report. This is much better than my somewhat similar, but much worse, experience with bun: I hit a bug that had been fixed by one bot, accidentally reverted by another, released broken, then fixed by a third
