After 1.5 years of pouring my heart into my very first game, I'm so excited to finally announce that... Drawquarium is coming to Steam on November 13! 🥹 Draw your own fish, bring them to life, and create your little underwater world, even as a live wallpaper! Like+RT = ♥️ #IndieGames #Cozygames

This text is a great example of how Opus (and possibly other models) keep attributing agency to random things. The algorithm doesn't know. It does not assume. No human would ever blame an algorithm for assuming something.

I especially like the idea that indie devs should spend 50 000$ in AI tokens and that this somehow assumes their time is free or that indie devs even have 50k laying around to burn in the slop machines.

I come from a priviledged position in that I'm an experienced consultant with a solid gig partner, so even if my game flops I can still recover by going back to consulting. But the whole point of quitting my job and minimizing my living expenses was to maximize the time I can spend on making games.

I think that the drive to mass vibe code games comes from fundamental misunderstanding of analytics. It is easy to look at any game market and go "only 1% of games are profitable", but it takes a real idiot to then from that derive that if you release 100 slop games one of them will be profitable

Tim Sweeney sees AI as transformative, not in "make game dev more accessible to everyone" way but in "we can get a bigger share of the pie to ourselves" way. They see it as a reasonable trade, the dev trades their saving for time, and Tim Sweeney gets more money. Win-win, right?

Well, there is one crucial component missing. Indie devs make games because they like games, and they like making them. Making games is a really bad business decision and in most cases you'd be better off just having a regular career. So framing it only as a business choice misses the point entirely

Which brings us to the point of why Tim Sweeney is pushing this so hard. If you are an indie dev with modest savings and you quit your job to make your dream game, you are predominantly spending those savings to cover your necessities. This means the money is going to rent, food, utilities etc

None of that money is going to Tim Sweeney, and Tim Sweeney doesn't like that. He wants all of that money to go to him. That's why he wants you to spend all of it on "AI credits" instead of, you know, life. More money to him and his friends and less to your local community.

I'm usually very slow at waking up and and especially during weekends I can spend like an hour just laying down in bed. But I have now discovered a method for getting out of the bed really fast: spiders on my pillow

Speaking of, is anyone still doing these? Like what Humble Bundle, Indie Gala, etc used to be? I guess itchio has bundles but those don't really have the same vibe.

I think I got the first Torchlight from one of those indie game bundles, don't remember which one. I miss those.

shitposts aside, this one is serious, my loves: if you’re just waking up and you have any service online running PHP 5.4 to latest, you need to take it down RIGHT NOW and don’t put it back online until after it’s patched absolutely catastrophic vulnerability dropped in the middle of the night

You are right to push back on this. When I said I generated a random private key, I actually just used the number 4. I did this to speed up deployment and to avoid pulling in a random number generator as a dependancy because I saw an old memory saying "STOP PULLING is-odd AS A DEPENDENCY FFS".

Asked Sol (via opencode) to "remove all AI-generated content from this project" and it responded with "would you rather remove all AI attribution labels, leaving the content in place?". No, fucker, I do not want that.

Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games. You've got my support 💖

no no this is the golden age of gaming actually, we are just getting really close to the eclipse

Mat Piscatella@matpiscatella.bsky.social

The "golden age of gaming" isn't one where the vast majority of people who love games can't afford the equipment to play them and where those who make the games get their ideas (and ability to pay rent) stolen from them.

You might be confused why I have such different opinions for using AI for programming vs AI art, but you have to understand that I get paid to write code that no one will ever read. It is not ideal and I would rather be building something meaningful but I have very little control over the market.

I don't particularly enjoy writing shitty throwaway code to deliver some feature no one wants just so management can get their quarterly bonus or whatever, so I don't really have strong opinions on using AI for this either. (this isn't about my current client)

Now, art on the other hand is the complete opposite. I'm not making art because I need food (well, not yet at least) but because I want to. Art is one of the few things I have real control over and I'm not spending my very limited time with it looking at or creating slop.
