In the overview, Heldt, Fioretos and I distinguish between adaption and maladaptation and exogenous and endogenous sources of change in complexes, finding prevalence of endogenous sources is conducive to adaptation. We invite others to investigate further. academic.oup.com/isagsq/artic...

Wise words from @lordrickettsp.bsky.social on BBC R4 Today after Trump’s abandonment of Ukraine: UK gov’t has to start a conversation with the people about the threats from Russia & what it means for us. Europe can’t keep hoping that life will return to normal, as long as Trump & Putin are in power.

I have a new piece out in GSQ, co-authored with B. Reinsberg. Our paper examines how established multilateral development banks respond when new MDBs enter the field. It finds that legacy MDBs generally confront new competitors by undertaking projects within their geographical or sectoral domains.

Thanks to everyone who joined yesterday’s UNU Centre for Policy Research Global Governance Innovation (GGI) webinar on “Building Resilient Global Governance for an Era of Recurring Crises.” Apologies to those whose questions we couldn’t get to. The recording will be available shortly.

Have you ever wondered about what we know about the broad patterns, the causes, and the consequences of contestation of IOs? We – @jonastallberg.bsky.social, Michael Zürn and I – did and therefore set out to take stock of the state of the art. Our review is out now in @iojournal.bsky.social.

🚨 PUBLICATION ALERT 🚨 I am extremely excited that the First View of my new article "Strongmen, Populism, and Soccer: Comparing Silvio Berlusconi, Viktor Orbán, and Donald Trump" is now available. It was quite an ordeal to get it past reviewer 2, but I made it with help of special issue editors.

It was a powerful event with Gordon Brown at the UoG this evening. Launching his new book, Brown energetically linked the breakdown of the rules-based international order to collapsing civic ties ('Bowling alone'). Interesting argument and food for thought!

Interesting event on geopolitical conflict in the Arctic and beyond at the Edinburgh International Book Festival last night. But one thing struck me: I was among the youngest people in the room. How do we get more young people interested in discussing a rapidly changing world order?

I visited the site of the Nuremberg Trials this week. Given the horrors they responded to, it's of course been difficult. At the same time, it has been reassuring. The trials show that it is possible to build international institutions that advance the cause of justice.

The rules-based #order is not doomed to fail – its fate rests with #middlepowers who can fill the gap left by the #US under #Trump! 📖 This is a key takeaway from my book, "After Exit: US withdrawal and alternative leadership," which is now under contract with Oxford University Press #OUP!
