At the beginning of June, I started a new chapter. This summer, I'm taking care of my kids (helping my daughter get healthy post-accident), exploring AI tools I never had bandwidth for, working with some incredible teams, and giving myself permission to breathe💙

Todd has helped so many people. This is an opportunity to support him and his family. Every bit counts.

This post is unavailable.

What a way to end summer. Took 16 to Linkin Park (1st CD I ever bought), facilitated my first Continue launch week (went great!), escaped to Cape Cod with 13, and got the kids ready for school. Sometimes the best weeks are the busiest ones 🥰

Yesterday at Virtual Coffee, we talked about the impact of AI on mental models and the impact on edu, kids, healthcare, etc. Not for or against AI, but with the perspective of “it’s here, and it’s impacting society, so how do we make sure it does it in the best way possible.”

I’m moving into a new decade today. I’ve officially hit my 40s. The last decade has been both the best and worst of my life. It’s had the greatest highs, followed by the greatest lows, and the lowest lows, followed by the highest highs.

I had to learn to ask for help, to be ok with crying in front of people, with being open and honest, with understanding myself and recognizing when I need to reach out to friends or teammates or those around me.

I’ve learned it’s about the people around you, growing your community, and finding your people, the ones you text when you’re going through a hard time, the ones you share your good news, who celebrate with you. Here’s to the next decade, and the amazing friends who stick with me along the way.

I’ve given my 1st tech talk, took the stage for pub conf, MC-ed conferences, organized a virtual conference, written screenplays and pilots, published my 1st novel w/ my brothers, started a micro fiction newsletter, saw my kids hit more milestones than I could’ve imagined, made friends as an adult.

Moved to a fantastic neighborhood for our family, and persevered in spite of obstacles put in front of me that I didn’t believe I could make it past. The thing that’s constant is that I didn’t do it alone.

I’ve had doctors tell me I’m not their problem, women tell me that no one would believe in me if I developed a free community, a man tell me I didn’t know how to squat bc I could do more than him. I’ve navigated layoffs, career uncertainty, and become a spokesperson opposing a local landfill.

I’ve seen my kids go through more pain and heartbreak than I ever thought I would, and felt the heartbreak even more deeply as a parent.

I had my last kid (total to 4), moved from teaching college English to working in tech, navigated a pandemic and built an online community (Virtual Coffee). Done things I never thought I’d physically accomplish, deadlifted > 250 lbs, squatted ~2x my body weight, lifted > half my weight over my head.

Big news, coming soon. Recently, I had a great interview experience w/ an amazing team and got an offer. But an unexpected opportunity came up with a company I’m really excited about. It was too good to pass up. I’m super grateful for the experience and excited for what’s ahead.

This week, I invested in my son's startup. He and his friends pitched the idea. I funded the supplies. Gave them seed money. Let them lead. 4 hours later, they brought in a 1100% return. Sometimes, the best investment isn't in the market. Sometimes, it's in a lemonade stand 😂

Monday I’m starting a new chapter in my career and life. The best part of it is that I have space to breathe, imagine, and create. I’m ready for this.

One of the simplest ways to build goodwill with someone is attention to detail. Spell their name right. Remember their kids' names. Ask about their dog. Find the detail that's meaningful to them.

Since OpenSauced shutdown, I've been exploring new ways to look at open source projects. I've really appreciated looking at collaboration metrics and their impacts. They tell the story of the human-side of open source. Here's more about that story: dub.sh/collab-cognee

dub.shBeyond Stars and Forks: Why Open Source Needs Better Collaboration MetricsThis post explores why open source needs better collaboration metrics and how tools like Collab.dev can reveal the human side of contribution, from PR responsiveness to community health.

Today I went to a new gym and did the KB version of the murph: - 1 mi run - 100 kb snatches - 200 kb clean and presses - 300 kb swings - 1 mi run I may not wake up tomorrow but I regret nothing ☠️

I finally finished the last post in my Reciprocity series. It took longer than expected bc I had a lot to say about building systems that encourage reciprocity and help to reduce burnout and bottlenecks. Let me know what you think. dub.sh/reciprocity-...

Love @nickyt.online ! Always glad to catch one of his talks! Even if he *just* said he "vibe coded" something. hahaha #welistenandwedontjudge 🤣 #coolcat @virtualcoffee.io @bekahhw.com

It's wild to me that ppl still think it's more effective to track the minutes you work instead of the output. This is how you can tell the difference between an effective leader (counts delivered value) and one who just wants to check boxes (counts login hours).

Time tracker: "You were offline for 37 minutes this afternoon." Output leader: "Your project shipped early and clients are thrilled."

I recently finished From Strength to Strength, and it hit at the right time. As I approach 40, as someone who’s navigated career changes, weathered layoffs and acquisitions, and grown through the uncertainty of a pandemic, this book helped me put words to something I’ve been feeling for a while:

I’m not chasing the same markers of success I used to. I’m building something deeper and more meaningful and more aligned and lasting. I’m not just ready for what’s next. I’m already moving. You’re just going to have to keep up 😉

Today I’m officially in the last quarter of my 30s! - What books have you read that impacted your 40s? - what do you wish you would’ve done? - what advice do you have for someone excited about hitting the 40 milestone?

I'm a big believer in a human-centered approach. Part of that means a thriving environment includes healthy giving + receiving. This week, I wrote about how reciprocity intelligence--a learnable skill--can protect your team/community from false givers and burnout: dub.sh/reciprocity-...

If you're building an internal tool to replace an external one with half the features, no docs, and a weird login flow…guess what they’re going to keep using?

Oh hey, it's a new week, so I need new goals. What are y'all up to? I'm trying to: - publish a blog post - finish last minute details for the virtual coffee conference - 5 workouts, sunlight, high protein - deepen my network - build out content schedules for 2 campaigns

If every minute of your workday has to be tracked, you’re not optimizing for innovation. You’re optimizing for burnout and silos. People need unstructured time to think, connect, question, and experiment. That’s where progress lives.

Just a PSA to everyone working on a product out there: someone on your team should be getting feedback from users. This should be the rule, not the exception.

New week, new goals. What's everyone up to this week? I'm trying to: - Ship 2 blogs - MC 1 Virtual Coffee - Finalize some VC conference week events - Create process docs - Finally get back on my workout/healthy eating schedule - Scope out moving my blog from Jekyll to Astro 🤔
