🚨 PREPRINT 🚨 In our systematic review and meta-analysis, we tackle a challenging evidence base to show that administering antibiotics to beef cattle increases the abundance of antibiotic resistance determinants (bacteria and resistance genes) during and after antibiotic administration 💊🐂 (1/n).

Paris, the capital of France, has recorded more days above 40°C this week than during the 147-year period spanning from 1872 to 2019. Historic is an understatement.

Breaking: Government set to cut strategic priorities grant.
The government is on the cusp of cutting public funding for higher education teaching, the head of Universities UK has told MPs, placing institutions under even more financial pressure.

I promised myself I would actually have a first author systematic review out by my fourth (!) @eshackathon.bsky.social - so it is fitting that on today, the first day of #ESH-Norge (hosted by @drmattg.bsky.social) our preprint it published. 🎉💻 (8/n).

This is important because of the intensification of beef production globally (e.g. spread of feedlots in Latin America), presenting a risk to global health (e.g. via the food chain). These systems are associated with higher antibiotic use for therapy, prophylaxis, and growth promotion (6/n).

We also encountered these difficulties, but used rigorous and innovative systematic review and meta-analysis methods to help cut through them. This enables us not only to identify these effects, but also characterise their uncertainty more acutely (4/n). [sorry GIF choice is limited here]
The end result is we think the most extensive systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic to date, which should motivate further regulation of antibiotics in the beef industry and improvements to future primary research in this and related areas (e.g. trials of antibiotic alternatives). (5/n)

Moreover, we present evidence that these effects are moderated by time - increasing with the number of days of continuous antibiotic administration, and decreasing with the number of days since cessation of antibiotic administration ⏱️📈📉. (2/n).
Whilst these may seem very logical conclusions, previous evidence syntheses (e.g. the one below) have struggled to demonstrate draw them given issues such as a limited number of studies, limited reporting, and limited data sharing in this field 📝💽 (3/n). doi.org/10.1111/zph.13218
Getting increasingly fucked off by scientist's willingness to use AI to make project logos, scicomm illustrations etc. Although our budgets are being slashed, they are still so humungous compared to the arts that we can afford to cost in and pay real artists for this in our grants, and should.
There are some people you can consistently rely on to provide reassurance when you need them. Yesterday it was my parents when I was doubting myself about scaling a ladder*, today it was @asanchez-tojar.bsky.social when I was doubting myself about meta-analysis. Keep them close, whoever they are 👍
*I say reassurance - they said exactly all the wrong things at all the wrong times to reassure me, and actively made the ladder leas stable whilst I was on it, but they were invaluable at passing me things and being there in case I did fall off
Is there a polymarket for predicting status changes (expression of concern, erratum, correction, retraction)? At the least there will be PubPeer posts #QRPVibes
Over the past several years, traffic fatalities in the U.S. increased by nearly 15% on the same days as the biggest album releases from artists like Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny, researchers from Harvard Medical School found.
Increasingly convinced people like to use AI to review their papers and grant applications to avoid getting offended by comments left by an actual person
😱🤯 -- Just looked up the cost to go gold open access at Nature Eco Evo: US$12850! That's $21,600 NZD. That's the same cost as a Royal Society Master's Scholarship!
This has gone too far. Absolutely bonkers.

There's a joke going round software engineering circles that, soon, with AI, all that will be needed is for people to accurately describe precisely what they want in a piece of software. So: software engineering jobs are safe.
It's amusing, but the state of AI coding is both alarming AND overhyped.
Being an evidence synthesist often feels like you’re a dog owner who doesn’t have time to walk their own dogs, because you’re too busy picking up all the shit that other dog owners let their dogs leave all over the park
