First quarter final match of the #BiscuitWorldCup today - chocolate digestives v. Jezyki. Obviously chocolate digestives rolled it home, but what a match! Some inspired play from Jezyki - weak on the dip, but intriguingly, a little bit like a lion bar. At the end of the day, not quite biscuit enough

Our new paper out now in QSA models the Storegga tusnami wave using more realistic palaeobathymetry based on the most recent glacio-isostatic modelling outputs for the North Sea, and shows that significant wave propagation south of Dogger Bank is extremely unlikely.

"Propagation of the Storegga tsunami in the southeastern North Sea" is published in Quaternary Research Advances today. Open access paper (doi.org/10.1016/j.qs...) examining the degree to which the tsunami from the 8150 BP Storegga slide would have been able to reach the coasts of Denmark+Germany.

Mummer badger!

Mat Pringle@matpringle.bsky.social

Another linocut Mummer! Not going to lie ‘Ride Your Pony’ by Lee Dorsey was not the inspiration for this dance but that particular song - you know the one - isn’t on Instagram. Small mercies…

I mean, just look at this, and tell me it's not a work of art.

The first phase of Over Needingworth’s Barrow 20 involved an in-situ cremation event followed by the construction of a turf mound. The cremation took place directly on the buried soil surface and left traces of the pyre remains.

Really enjoying a beautiful series of posts from @cambridgearch.bsky.social from the Over Needingworth excavations; not just for the snapshots of a changing landscape, but for some beautiful examples of the craft of excavation.

Cambridge Archaeological Unit@cambridgearch.bsky.social

The 2020-21 Over Needingworth excavations revealed an area of preserved wooden stakes/posts and stake/postholes, with 58 being fully excavated and recorded. Dating to the Roman period the stakes and posts reflected use of the land when the area had transformed from a prehistoric dry land to fen.

Group D was a really tough group with some classic biscuits slogging it out; great to see the often under-rated Malted Milk doggedly push on to end top of the group, whilst shockingly, fig rolls crashed out with 0 points

Beach ridge complex and dunes at Pointe aux Chenes, Michigan. I've got it in my slides for a case study on post-glacial rebound and other causes of lake level change on the Great Lakes, and I had to post it here again.

Wazzing giant, as sketched by the brilliant Eric Ravilious. Literally the most English thing ever

Brian Edwards@public-history.bsky.social

A letter was written by Eric Ravilious to Christine Nash on 11 December 1939, while staying at the New Inn, in Cerne Abbas, Dorset, to paint the Cerne Abbas Giant. Extraordinary that the Giant is urinating in all directions, but wonderful he mentions Westbury where he is to paint the White Horse.

For a project by the University of Manchester, poet Dr Abbi Flint wrote a poem inspired by the fox fur armlet buried with Lindow Man. During this year’s Festival, we were lucky to hear Abbi recite the poem as we explored Risley, Holcroft and Chat Moss National Nature Reserve with Natural England

Digging these submerged landscapes would not be possible without the brick pits. Must Farm Quarry is the largest aperture in the fens. In this window we get to explore Fenland in microcosm. Delve beneath metres of peat & silt and explore land surfaces contemporary with the creation of the North Sea.

Cambridge Archaeological Unit@cambridgearch.bsky.social

The latest phase of work at Must Farm explored the bottom of the Flag Fen Basin (before it was submerged in the Middle Bronze Age) together with the much deeper floodplain of the prehistoric River Nene.
