I just listened to a Dharma talk by Marisela Gomez, a Dharma teacher in the Plum Village tradition. She reminded us that our purpose here is to be love. Not be loved and not to love. But to be love. Embody love. That this is particularly important .. 1/4 #ThichNhatHanh #Mindfulness #Buddhism #Zen

warm up sequence of movements the instruction was "Lift your heart to the heavens" while stretching arms and chest to the ceiling. And my heart cried "NO! No no no no. Don't lift, I need to be right here. Protected." Before that I hadn't even known that my trauma was activated. I tended to it. 3/4

But today's talk reminded me that I can do more than that. I can practice all the things that help me be love. Practices that help me out of the looping mind, practices that remind me of my non-self nature & how everything is in me & I'm connected to everything. Being in nature always helps. 4/4

take refuge in the island of self. Instead we can take refuge in nature. Or in other people who have that same stability and solidity. We can see in them what kind of practices have helped them developed their peace. I've prioritized being in community and in nature. Co-regulation is powerful . 2/2

Christiana Figueres is a student of Thich Naht Hanh and member of the Plum Village sangha. I had the good fortune of attending a retreat with her in June of last year. It is a blessing to listen to her speak. I can't make this session below today, but absolutely would if I could. #climate 1/2

Breath Awareness When we follow our breath, there are different parts of our bodies, where we can experience the breath. The rising and falling of our abdomen, the air cool at our nostrils as with breathe in and warm as we breathe out, the throat. #ThichNhatHanh #PlumVillage #Mindfulness 1/3

Paying attention at different parts has a different impact on our nervous system. Focusing on our abdomen calms us, while focusing on the nostrils is more invigorating. 2/3

TWOII had two wonderful episodes on meditation. They are some of my favorite episodes. This first episode focuses on awareness of the breath, the body and the feelings as taught in the first 8 exercises of mindful breathing of the Δ€nāpānasati Sutta. plumvillage.org/podcast/the-... 3/3

"It only takes one breath." When I heard Thay say this in a podcast 18 years ago it filled me with such hope. My mind was in chaos. Meditation was impossible. But I thought I can do 1 breath. It didn't matter if it was ragged or short or painful - as it 1/2 #ThichNhatHanh #PlumVillage #Mindfulness

often was. Paying attention to just 1 breath opened a tiny little clearing in the pandemonium that was consuming me from the inside. It encouraged me to try it again - & maybe try 2 breaths or 3. The experience of just a moment of calm made me try walking & eating meditation. Peace is possible. 2/2

This helps me if I’m feeling particularly agitated and it’s difficult to follow the breath otherwise. It can also feel really pleasant to rest in the little moments of stillness in between in and out breath. Conscious breathing is our anchor. 5/6

For some people, especially people who have experienced trauma, the breath is not a safe space. Meditation should never turn our body or mind into a battlefield. If the breath doesn’t feel safe, it is better to find a different access point. 6/6

This step helps us build concentration. When our limbic system is hijacked, if we can stop the cascading of thoughts, the storyline, it takes 90 seconds for the cortisol etc to leave our systems and for us to feel calm again. So if we are upset for more than a minute and a half, it’s because 3/6

we get re-triggered by the storyline in our heads. Following the breath the whole way, helps us abandon the storyline. For me it is often helpful in the beginning to breathe in as I’m counting to 4 and breathe out as I’m counting to 7 focusing on having no gap between in and out breath. 4/6

With the simple act of recognition, ah this is an in-breath, we reconnect with our bodies. No thinking required. We feel our breath. It happens by itself. The second step is β€žBreathing in, I follow my in-breath all the way through.

What a beautiful, heartfelt wake up call on how to live fully. Not in denial about the difficulties. And at the same time fully awake to the wonders of life. We may not have a cancer diagnosis but we are all dying every moment.

We have to take care of our senses that way. We don't want to be completely closed off but sometimes we need to return to ourselves and limit what is coming in from the outside. And when we open our windows we do so mindfulness to protect ourselves. So that the wind doesn't blow through us. 5/6

Tea meditation is such a lovely practice. It feels easy to be present: the smell of the tea, the warm cup against my hand, the liquid running down my throat. And it's a deep practice. There is a cloud in my tea. (1/2) #Buddhism #Mindfulness #ThichNhatHanh #PlumVillage #meditation

Looking deeply I can see many things in the tea. The sunshine, the soil, workers harvesting the herbs, the sangha who purchased this tea I'm drinking. At what point does the tea become me as I swallow it? The tea and I inter-are.

Holding my face in my two hands and resting in this posture while listening. Then crossing my arms in front of me and holding my face (right hand on left cheek & left hand on right cheek). This is the ancestors' embrace. And the tears came. Anger turning to grief. This world is a lot sometimes. 3/3
