I don’t think AI researchers for the most part really believe they’re going to kill us all. I also don’t think it’s like a cynical marketing strategy or something, it’s too widespread and organic a sentiment for that. Why they keep saying it is an interesting question.

Partly it might be that it makes what they’re doing feel important and meaningful. But it’s not as if the technology would not be important and meaningful otherwise.

Talking about and conceptualizing things in terms of these huge tail risks or impacts - like the Shrimp welfare stuff - seems to just be fashionable in the Bay Area. I suspect that has a lot to do with it.
