Hey Elixir friends! :) Hologram v0.12 is out, now with much faster compiles and much smaller bundles. It builds a 9,000-module app that v0.11.1 ran out of memory on, and that app's runtime bundle went from 5.6 MB to 660 KB, 133 KB gzipped in production. hologram.page/blog/hologra...

This week in the Hologram Showcase: Combat Log by Dillon O'Connor, goal tracking and reports for software teams. He started it on LiveView, then clicked around the Hologram website, found that it felt instant, and moved his app over page by page. hologram.page/showcase/com...

Usually I'm the one on stage talking about Hologram. This November it's someone else, and that feels great :) @jamauro.bsky.social is speaking at ExMex in Austin, Nov 12-13: "The Future of Full-Stack Elixir: Building Local-First Apps with Hologram". Details and tickets in the replies.

The first project in the Hologram Showcase is... Hologram's own website :) 62 pages, 96 browser tests, and every page I add to it is a test of the framework. It's also the first chance to see what a Showcase entry looks like: hologram.page/showcase/hol...

Apps shouldn't pay for features they don't use. Hologram's local-first data layer is on the way, and this week I made sure an app without a data model gets none of its code. The compiler's whole obsession is shipping as little as possible. Dozens more ideas lined up :)

Most Elixir devs I talk to already know about Hologram. But before they give it a try they want to see who else is using it and what's possible. So I'm starting a Showcase! If you've built an app with Hologram or a library for it, I'd love to have it there: hologram.page/showcase/sub...

The next few months are all about adoption for me, so this would help a lot. And if you know someone who uses Hologram, please tag them in the replies or send them this post :)

Small confession. Smaller bundles in Hologram v0.12 took me two tries. The first was a 12,600-line data flow analysis. I threw it away. That hurt a bit... What shipped just checks what the server sends. On a 9,000-module app the runtime went from 5.6 MB to 660 KB, 133 KB gzipped in production :)

Last week at Goatmire Elixir I showed a local-first app in pure Elixir on a theatre stage from 1895. I stayed in a hotel with 15,000 books and a spa named after Lenin, and came home wanting to play with hardware. Thank you @lawik.bsky.social and Stina for organizing it! New Hologram release soon :)

Hey Elixir friends! :) Hologram v0.11 is out, now with Elixir regexes running in the browser and client errors that read exactly like server errors, stacktraces included. Plus dynamic tags, attribute and prop spread, and umbrella support. hologram.page/blog/hologra...

New to Hologram? You write the entire app in Elixir, templates, event handlers, client-side state and all. The Elixir runtime itself was rebuilt to run in the browser, so client-side code behaves exactly as it would on the server. Local-First is on the roadmap.

Recently, I got attendee feedback for my ElixirConf EU talk about Hologram, the full-stack web framework I'm building that runs your Elixir code in the browser. One of the comments: "Bart Blast seems like a man on a mission, and we are along for the ride." You bet I am! Glad to have you along :)

Most frontend code isn't UI. It's data plumbing - caching, syncing, loading states, and more. Hologram's new Local-First data layer takes it over: declare what the data should be, it syncs itself in the browser, offline included. Pure Elixir. Teaching it hands-on at ElixirConf US, Sept.

Soon I start building the most ambitious thing I've attempted with Hologram (my full-stack Elixir framework): the Local-First data layer. Your app keeps its data locally, syncs in the background, and keeps working offline - all of it written in Elixir.

So I'm turning the research into a landscape analysis blog post. Before I write it - what would you want it to answer? How the engines compare? Where they fall short? What any of this means for Elixir?

I came out with a pile of notes and a few opinions I didn't expect to have. Some of it made it into my ElixirConf EU talk this year - I'll share the video here once it's out. (And the regular releases keep coming while I work on this - v0.10 went out this week, about a month after v0.9.)

Ambitious enough that before writing any code, I spent the past months studying every serious sync engine out there - Electric, Zero, Automerge, Jazz and friends.

New to Hologram? It's a framework for full-stack web apps written entirely in Elixir, no JavaScript to write. The Elixir runtime runs in the browser, so the same language powers the client and the server. Local-First is on the roadmap. Website: hologram.page
