As the US completely cedes development aid to China globally, it's worth remembering that the universally-accepted image of a grim cyberpunk future is not a theoretical prediction but rather an actual memory of a stateless city in China that was demolished 30 years ago.

My favorite Vivekananda quote is "The lesson will be repeated until it is learned" and unfortunately I think the US is beginning a looooong session of exemplifying that

Genuine LLM question: what's going to happen in a couple of years when a Javascript framework changes its syntax in a breaking way and none of the models are trained on that?

I'm trying to avoid the depressing conclusion that the richer people get the more angry and miserable they become but global politics is really reinforcing that idea lately

Gen Xers get really angry when you demonstrate to them that they almost certainly didn't watch the Challenger explode live, even though they strongly believe they did

It's interesting that I don't see in the music world the kind of pushback against generative AI that I see in writing and visual art. I don't know if it's because we just had these fights already (samplers came out in the 80s so we've had an IP regime that rewards sampled creators for decades) (1/)

Or maybe it's that algorithms have had a much bigger role in music creation than in writing or visual arts since forever (and in that sense Brian Eno won this fight 50 years ago). But I also wonder if e.g. Stable Diffusion just hasn't found its Mark Taylor yet. Before he produced "Believe" (2/)

Everybody was saying autotune was going to be the end of music. Then "Believe" came out and everybody said "oh, *that's* what it's for!" The artist that does that with image generation is out there but she hasn't been discovered yet.

Also while this is uncomfortable to say maybe the entire online population self-diagnosing based on YouTube videos wasn't a great idea

People SERIOUSLY need to stop using neurodivergence as an excuse for being a cunt. It's grotesque.

Non-ironically, 30 years on I feel like Ben is the good guy in Rent

I would like to once again mention "The Story of Us," the YIMBY Hallmark movie I watched two years ago, which features as the synthesis of its romantic conclusion a high-density mixed-use adaptive development.
