The Back Page: A Video Games Podcast

New episode! The Best Games of 2025. Two top 10 lists of the year's greatest video games. 3+ hours of chatter. Thanks for listening this year! Get it wherever podcasts are available: open.spotify.com/episode/7fd3...

Admittedly Kev is a knowledge gap.

New episode! The Best Games of 1998. It's widely considered one of the greatest years for video games ever. We talk about that and then loads of bullshit we were doing in 1998 that has nothing to do with games. Listen wherever you get podcasts:

Steak loaded fries bang (mega meat loaded fries also solid). Ensure you get one of his custom sauces.

To honor one of the studios that defined PC gaming, we've republished more than 20 articles about BioWare today. The pcgamer.com homepage is dedicated to interviews, retrospectives, and making-ofs about some of the best RPGs of all time.

Every time I open file explorer I wonder why I've got this.

@mrbasilpesto.bsky.social in case you've never seen it, I have to flag that there is an Onion article that pretty well sums up the moral theme of Metal Gear you zeroed in on in this one. A classic. theonion.com/peace-activi... Good ep as always, guys!

Take us back. #grunberg

Cosmic levels of disappointment incoming. 🪐

Due to Samuel's inability to count to 300, next week's episode will be The Best Games of 1998. Episode 300 will be our final regular episode of October now 🫡

New episode! What we've been playing, featuring: - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake - Gears of War: E-Day - Control Resonant And more! Listen wherever you get podcasts:

🤢

Boy do we have a treat for you: Matthew has played the Ocarina of Time remake, and this Friday we'll talk about it on the podcast.

👀

Having the pre-toast-cut version on my phone now, this is how having PT on a PS4 must feel.

Peanut butter. 🥜 🧈 👍

We're reuploading the MGS4 episode today to quickly slice a couple of instances of Samuel eating toast. Sorry about that. Rude!

Western triple-A is dying. Now what? A free one: newsletter.hitpoints.co/400-graveyar...

Superb. My version of this is when i pitched my "what if the Beatles were wizards" show to Sky in a swanky London club, where the tight arrangment of tables meant that Bane era Tom Hardy was able to glare furiously at me from a few inches over the exec's shoulder throughout. Insanely distracting.

A reminder that the @backpagepod.bsky.social Discord is quite British:

I think our Metal Gear Solid episodes have been some of our best chats. As we're taking a week off we've made the MGS2 Patreon episode available for everyone. For a fully immersive listen, scatter ice cubes around you at the outset and watch them melt in real time.

No new podcast this week. 🫡 But maybe we'll give the free feed sickos our MGS2 Patreon pod from a few months ago to hype up Monday's MGS4 podcast...

I'm looking forward to the in universe Games Court pod to listen to while performing a bank heist.

Pleased to announce that we've collaborated with Rockstar Games on TWO GIANT MEN FM. It only unlocks when Jason eats four burgers in a row.

My latest nonsense:

You'll never see us do this. Maybe it scores you some algorithm wins or other bullshit, but everyone knows what two giant white blokes wearing headphones looks like.

New episode! We've called it 'An Irrelevant Mailbag Foolishly Recorded at 7.30AM'. What more is there to say? Listen wherever you get podcasts: open.spotify.com/episode/0xQc...

All the Bond films are on Prime Video again in the UK if you want to watch Dr. No and get ahead of next month's From Russia With Love Patreon episode. #dadalerts

As one of our Discorders put it: "imagine if it was the ship from Minishoot’ Adventures though"

This is why we're so grateful for your support. When we set up the podcast, we never really envisioned it as this little island in the storm affecting games media – but The Back Page *is* basically our outlet now.

Yeah, what happened to Judge Castle's knighthood? (The answer: breaking several UN laws).

I think smiley faces are the future of game reviews. Less 6/10, more 😐

@samuelwroberts.bsky.social stumble at the start of this week's episode of @backpagepod.bsky.social is like when you suddenly become very conscious of the way you are walking, and start worrying you're walking wrong. Glorious. 😆

The latest @retrogamermag.bsky.social cover is stunning. @wiloverton.bsky.social is a genius!

Cracking listen, this. I really enjoyed working on Vice Gaming back in the day, and I'll always be grateful to Mike for that. Some great anecdotes here, too.
