Between Changpeng Zhao and reporting on the Trump Admin trying to force WB to sell to Skydance, today was a bad day for America as a free market economy and a good day for gangster capitalism.

Roselle partner @mfarmer.bsky.social outlines thoughts on DOE's start of a rulemaking process at FERC on large load interconnection. This is MUCH better than the last time the Trump Admin kicked off a rule making process at FERC (in 2017 aimed at keeping piles of coal around)

As someone with several papers cited, I can say that - at least for the sections I know most about - this "report" is full of selectively chosen studies, misrepresentations and half-truths, specious logic, and dated science

This is an embarrassment for the sterling reputation all of the real scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy. Shame on Chris Wright.

There will be lots of debate today about climate action, and how it affects politics and whether Democrats should remain steadfast in their advocacy for it or instead focus on other things (or perhaps even actively disclaim the importance of action) as a path to political power.

But, for the record, greenhouse gases significantly contribute to dangerous climate change. Lowering US emissions will be meaningful to Americans and the world, directly and by way of what they mean for technological and international leadership.

One nugget: I think this is the first time a specific threshold is set for the percent of federal $ that triggers NEPA (50%), though many questions remain for how one calculates this (particularly in the context of loans, tax credits, etc).

One final note. The EO speaks of the importance of transmission (and specifically high voltage transmission). This is extremely correct. We need much more for data centers, reliability etc. But it's quite ironic to highlight the importance of high voltage transmission today of all days.

Both support data centers and also the generation needed to power them. Biden required carbon-free power sources (wind, solar, nuclear, geothermal, hydro, CCS) and storage. The Trump EO references nat gas, coal, nuclear, and geothermal (not hydro storage or of course wind or solar)

Both talk about permitting streamlining through tools like categorical exclusions and FAST-41. The Trump EO has more on avoiding ESA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, CERCLA, TSCA.

A few interesting notes: This EO finally repeals the Biden AI Infrastructure EO issued just days before the end of his term. Many of the concepts in this new EO are similar to what was in the Biden EO, but Wario versions. Both would use DOI DOE and DOD lands for data centers and associated power.

Both call on agencies to identify financial tools that can encourage buildout of these data centers and power. Though the Biden EO is much more detailed about what authorities DOE can use (particularly on grid)

As a lawyer, you know you're having a bad day when a federal judge uses an exclamation point. As the Executive Branch you SHOULD know you're having a bad day when it's used to tell you to follow the law.

An update to this story: Judge Sullivan in the DC District Court today held that the Trump/Vought OMB was unlawfully hiding their spending decisions in violation of Congress's "apportionment transparency" law. He vacated their action and issued a permanent injunction.

Interior issues new memo in response to anti-wind/solar Executive Order that requires any of 69 types of decisions/actions to go to the Office of the Secretary. This is the way you stall and kill projects. Intentionally red-tape projects to death.

Just another example of how this Administration's "deregulation" and "efficiency" and "permitting reform" narrative is not the real story bsky.app/profile/azev...

Avi Zevin@azevin.bsky.social

This is extremely true of the energy sections too. A paperwork and regulatory mess for businesses. Any assertion about this Administration's "deregulation" agenda that does not include this new impenetrable web of requirements is missing a key aspect of the story.

US withdrawal from the IEA because we're mad about modeling assumptions in reports would be extremely shortsighted (and ironic). The IEA coordinates international strategic petroleum withdrawals. Without it, our ability to respond effectively to a global oil shock would be significantly diminished.

One of my favorite most outrageous parts of the bill is the $1 BILLION giveaway to metallurgical coal producers in the US, even when that coal is exported. We’re going to subsidize iron and steel in countries like China to compete with U.S.-made steel. There’s your govt waste right there.

Friday overnight, they added a line to the #OBBA that would send hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to China to subsidize dirty steel. Insane. A subsidy for #coal we mostly export. A subsidy to export coal to China to produce steel for less. Steel they use to compete with America.

Wrote a thing (with @jakehigdon.com). Congress is killing IRA tax credits in an effort to look "tough on China." But the effect will be the exact opposite.

Trying to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains and bolster U.S. and allied manufacturing makes total sense. But the bill will do the opposite by undercutting U.S. energy supply and manufacturing with a web of unworkable red tape.

"There is a way to apply a set of carefully crafted restrictions to wean us off Chinese supply chains, but . . . if we scatter rakes across the floor for companies to step on, they will just throw up their hands and send their investments overseas, leaving us more reliant on China than before."

The Republicans are about to enact a MAJOR (50%+) increase on American energy sources. To everyone who decried the political calculus of the BTU tax or "cap and tax", what will you say now? Any non-ironic use of the phrase "energy dominance" should be laughed out the room.

The Senate bill raises the deficit by more than $3 trillion to give tax cuts to the richest people in America. The idea that the difference between slashing $400 billion & $500 billion in job-creating clean energy incentives creates sincere concerns for “Republican fiscal hawks” is beyond laughable.

We’ve got this surging energy demand. Our ability to deploy more stuff that’s not wind, solar and storage is supply-chain-limited. And what Congress wants to do is make it significantly more expensive to build out the stuff we can build www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Let’s be clear. New solar and wind plus batteries is how we are avoiding close calls this decade. And that was before the advent of AI driven demand growth.

Basically overnight, “foreign entity” restrictions are at the core of all U.S. energy policy. Not cost, not global competitiveness, not even GHG emissions. Entire industries will live and die based on untested and poorly defined concepts of foreign “assistance.” Absolute madness.

Manufacturers and data center operators better get used to Europe-level electricity prices, because that’s maybe a best case scenario under the latest Senate BBB. Looking like a 50% or greater tax increase on clean energy development at a time when demand is skyrocketing. Truly self-defeating.

Robbie is right. This is much worse than full repeal for wind/solar. Adds 2 new taxes on wind and solar: * new tax for wind/solar facilities (including rooftop solar) starting in 2028 * kills 5-year depreciation for wind solar

Robbie Orvis@robbieorvis.bsky.social

Well we have the new text from Senate Budget, and we did indeed see the high water mark in the Finance text. The latest text is much worse: back to placed in service by and of 2027, same onerous and draconian FEOC requirements, NEW excise on tax on wind and solar.
