I've enjoyed seeing everyone's random memories of their interactions with Walter Koenig. "met" is an overstatement, but we were in the same room once and he seemed sad and grumpy and I'm glad he was either having a bad day or my perceptions were incorrect. I did not try to talk to him.

I get almost no e-mails from the DNC because I unsubscribed from everything when they hit me up for money right after Harris lost, but fact that I get dozens of texts every day and I send "STOP" and "END" to all the ones that are obviously legitimate really shows how broken our system is.

CAN-SPAM is not well regarded in my circles but it's apparently vastly more effective than whatever we have regulating unsolicited SMS.

They're afraid that allowing negatives to be publicly placed in the White Bucket would make people think badly of the White Collective, and like, maybe you just shouldn't have a White Collective.

T.C. Aurelius reposted

So I'm not gonna quote that stupid bullshit thing from RFK, but have you noticed that white supremacists insist that white culture is superior because they're individualists and Asians are collectivists and then they pull this shit? White supremacy is a form of collectivism. It's just a shitty one.

What should be happening is that borders should be getting easier to cross. We all lose to some degree when they get more difficult to cross.

Mamon Saleh had two suitcases packed for college. He had earned a full scholarship to Penn, and later one to a university in Hong Kong. But visa denials kept him in Latakia, Syria. He's one of the many students who are rich in aspirations and stuck in limbo. https://chroni.cl/4ia9B5S

I didn't know the Cheesecake Factory was a real place until I moved to Columbus. We didn't have those in Youngstown. We just had the Red Lobster on 224.

Also wtf what working class person goes to Cheesecake Factory now it’s under discussion A whole shift at Burger King wouldn’t cover a single dinner with a drink at Cheesecake Factory, that shit is for rich people, how the fuck are republicans trying to make that like sizzler on a Saturday buffet

I literally can't get my correct gender marker on my corrected birth certificate (X) because my state driver's license can only be F or M, which functionally means I'm not allowed to vote because my IDs don't match which is a felony, but somehow being nonbinary isn't part of my trans oppression?

Jess O'Thomson@jessothomson.co.uk

I still just find the idea that nonbinary people are somehow not materially oppressed like the real transsexuals are very funny. Like do you really think people with they/them pronouns on their CVs have an equal opportunity at employment? Lmao.

Koenig taught me the difference between "everyone's the hero of their own story" and "villains should be sympathetic." Bester was an advanced class in how to portray evil with depth without losing moral clarity or portraying horrific behavior as justified or sympathetic.

I watched Babylon 5 at an impressionable age when it was in reruns. Walter Koenig's Alfred Bester has left an indelible mark on who I am as a writer and how I think about writing villains.

This, except I'm 5+ years older.

The political media is visibly chafing at the current situation, where Republicans are glaringly awful, fucking everything up, running deviant candidates everyone hates, and Dems are just being normal & winning. The force is out of balance. They are viscerally eager to go after Dems about something.

I'm rewatching Babylon 5 with Partner, who's new to the show, and last time he saw Bester come on screen, he threw up his hands and yelled, "This asshole again!?" Do you know how good of an actor you have to be to elicit such a strong, instant response? Just a master class in acting.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

This is what I've been trying to talk about with people I know who object to all of the candidates in some races. It's far better to have someone read their whole ballot, vote for downballot candidates and measures, and skip some of the races at the top of the ticket than it is to not vote.

I think the reason I'm not freaking out about AI hacking as much as my colleagues who work for tech companies is that I've worked on so much of the internet that no one cares about. Banks, utilities, Amazon, government, hospitals have very real concerns.

Ok but I can use my access to break out of the program and get into your database and find all your data. Ok, well we have no account information and no money in there, but sure we have that PII I talked about before, and some trade secrets.

But none of it is valuable enough to ransom and enough if it is patented that you would just get sued into oblivion unless you are a bigger fish than us, in which case, there are better and easier ways to do corporate espionage. Like convincing an employee to break NDA.

If you had full admin level access to the software product I work on you could do something like cancel all our customers' orders. Well, some of them. If you tried to cancel all of them, it would time out.

You could request refunds for them. You could not request refunds for you. Unless you are them. You could not change their address or their direct deposit information because Linda types those in by hand and mails a paper check lol.

Like a lot of companies, many of our "automated" processes have several steps that are like "and then Linda copies the e-mail to drop box, and adds a line item to the accounts payable spreadsheet." I wouldn't say that makes it more secure, but it's hard to get things by Linda.

I can think of a thousand annoying things you could do to bother our employees, waste our time, waste our product, but none of it would be particularly entertaining, and none of it would make you any money, and that kind of sucks the motivation out quickly.

But the average corporate website has nothing of value worth stealing except personal information, and, as Americans, we have long since come to understand that's not secure. I get one of those "as part of a recent breach" letters once a week.

Right now I work on a multi-million dollar software platform for a company you have heard of and have never thought of as needing a multi-million dollar custom SaaS solution. And if someone broke in they could cause expensive problems, but there is no way to steal money.

The fact that the Ohio Democratic Party is going out of its way to silence and censure any dissent from the caucus shows pretty clearly they know it will cost them votes within the party. They just don't care about as as much as they do about potentially winning over a guy in a truck.

Ian Boudreau@ianboudreau.com

If it's the sound political strategy you claim to believe it is, what are you worried about, you'll more than make those lost votes up in disgusting centrists, right? Right? But you know deep down it doesn't work like that

I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

Ever notice "abusers can grow and change" uniformly comes from people who haven't actually checked if someone grew or changed? It's like a magic wand of sentiment they wave over harm.

T.C. Aurelius reposted

I've donated to a few candidates before and so my name is on lists of folks who can be persuaded to open up their wallets for dems in close races. And it's true! I can! The magic words are "trans rights are human rights and I will not dignify weird creeps' obsession with teen girls' genitals."

No. Talarico is not like El-Sayed. Not at all. When El-Sayed hires a GOP policy advisor that wrote the policies attacking Black women? Then you can compare the two. But hey, 500 likes of mostly white people, agreeing with other white people, that Black Texas voters have nothing to complain about.🤷🏿‍♂️

Ariel@ari-el222.bsky.social

he’s also given multiple speeches on this and has really been trying with outreach both during the primary and now. I think the media just really wants Black voters to abandon Dems. Talarico had more time to show this narrative was completely bunk but it really mirrors that coverage too

It always comes back to this for me; if AI was so good, such a disclosure would be a selling point. If AI was everything these slop jockeys said it was, they should be proud to let people know their game was AI made. But the proof is in the pudding, and they can't stand that people don't want it.
