Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

i hate games like this because there’s always normal words it won’t accept

Most economists agree that by the time you're 50, you should be living in a dilapidated Victorian mansion at the edge of the forest, sitting by a roaring fire, and discussing poetry with furtive ghosts and indifferent cats.

it ran on the Zenith Z-100, which was a weird little box with a built-in screen, ran a version of DOS wasn't quite PC compatible, but did have an Intel 8088 chip like a PC has

the fun part is it didn't distinguish graphics mode from text mode. so you'd be in DOS and could have lines and charts and stuff overlayed on top. And you could reprogram the ASCII characters on the fly to make a sort of sprite set

project hail mary the book is about a guy in a series of crisis situations, who uses problem solving skills to get out of them project hail mary the movie is about a guy in a series of crisis situations.

if you’ve read the book you might not notice the difference because the movie hits all of the plot beats in the same order

I’m not even sure this is bad! maybe think of it as an illustrated companion to the story, but not the story itself

the process is that I * downloaded a bunch of known-human public domain text * picked random excerpts of various length * then, an relatively weak AI described what each text was about without naming it * then, two randomly chosen AIs were asked to write prose based on the description

so about 1/3rd of the time you’ll get e.g. real excerpts from “Alice in Wonderland”, but 2/3rds of the time you’ll get “a scene where a girl named Alice muses nonsensically about her cat”

eventually maybe i’ll allow people to submit texts so they can get scored on how human they sound, but for now it’s just a corpus of a few thousand excerpts I selected
