At least 2 of the Catholic bishops who appeared in a photo praying over Trump this week have now released statements saying, in effect, that the administration manipulated them and created the publicity photos w/o their awareness or consent. Abp. Grob of Milwaukee: www.archmil.org/posts/a-publ...

The dustup over that executive who bragged that she uses genAI to come up with how to describe her child has got me wondering how the college admissions officers are going to enjoy reading all the AI-generated high school transcripts for their homeschool applicants.

Anyway, I expect I’ll have 2 more homeschool high school transcripts to write—one’s already underway—and I wouldn’t outsource the labor for anything. I love making lists of the books we’ve read together and the enrichment courses the kids have done and the art pieces they’ve completed. Memories.

But. Also maybe the sorts of folks who decide to do the homeschool thing will shift, in either direction, if the perception is that schools are encouraging genAI use. So perhaps that musing is entirely wrong.

(I’ve written three high school transcripts. I did them myself, keeping a working file for 4 years and adding as we went. If you DIY your curricula, a lot of universities want a detailed course description. I love documentation and bibliographes so they went about 11–12 pages.)

But it’s pretty easy to imagine someone less nerdy about it than me just asking an LLM to come up with something. OTOH, I suppose the admissions office will have an AI reading them too.

Missed this when it first came out

Urusula K. Le Guin: Here's my short story, "If even one person must suffer in a Torment Nexus, that's too much suffering to consciously allow" POLITICAL ECONOMY: Did you read Le Guin's latest? It's called "Hyper efficient Torment Nexus can convert one individual's suffering into maximized utility."

Q: Back to Chauvin -- what is your position on clemency for Derek Chauvin? DEMUTH: So, are there any more questions to do with the fraud?

This is definitely my favorite new-to-me etymology of the year

Hi! Small farmer here. "Farmer" literally & historically means "a big guy who farms out work to little people." The term "farmer" comes from Latin "firmus," or contract. "Tax farmer" & "farming out a task" are the original meanings of the term.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Brazilian observations. Read the whole thread, but this jumped out.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

Bovino admits we kicked his ass

Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl@deardara.bsky.social

hell yeah. Bovino says that he and the Trump administration leaving Mpls was "surrender". I will never stop hating this pissy violence toddler, and will never forget him gleefully handing out tear gas to his goons like so many party favors. Surrendered, you did. www.bbc.com/news/article...

I'm gonna be obsessing about this, can some photographers weigh in? Or people that attended the rally for Hourcar?

Aunt Fancy@auntiefancy.bsky.social

This story is important, but unrelated to the content there is something bizarre about photo the Strib used of the rally on 10/13. It REALLY looks like AI. Image on left is from @czbi.org bsky, right is what strib published. Oddest part is the very very similar but not identical sign in both pics.

Am watching game 2 on the jumbo screen in the 3rd Ward beer garden in downtown Milwaukee, where I am visiting my 23yo son, and I must say it is a good way to watch a baseball game

i've said this before, but it really bums me out how making "AI" image generation must have required a colossal image indexing and tagging operation, and instead of a huge beautiful archive of a jillion well-tagged well-sorted images we got a machine that manufactures facsimiles of them on demand

Good, we’ll have plenty of time to deal with any shenanigans. We are *trained* for dealing with shenanigans.

So many Minneapolis voters are voting early that the elections staff is starting to wonder if election day is going to be boring.

80% of our language interpreters come through the student election judge program and so many stay to become polling place leadership and early vote staff. It grows voters among youth and their families, and builds trust.

This is permanently invalidating for Yglesias. If we had not gone into the Minnesota streets to protest ICE they would be here still. Like the Nat’l Guard is in DC! Yglesias is too soft and cowardly and believes too strongly that his own comfort is inevitable. Everyone like this must be abandoned.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

What the absolute hell.

Serafina@serafinas.bsky.social

I should have mentioned that my office is Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services. The Mayor's budget eliminates seven staff members less than two weeks before an anxiety-inducing midterm. No more high school election judge program. No more voter outreach.

The high school election judge program is especially important. The language support they provide is irreplaceable. And a lot of the student judges go on to become some of our best “regular” election judges after high school.

It’s been a while since I have watched a baseball game and man the hi-def slo-mo clips of pitches really show off the extreme range of motion of the connective tissue of the human arm

I have left the Milwaukee bar, I have my limits of excitement and my companion (my 23yo son) has to get up v. early in the morning. Still, a fun way to spend five innings.

So, MSP folks, I have no following and don’t want one but I wonder if it would be a good idea for our networks to organize a one-day return to full patrolling. Reactivate the networks. Pick a day and everybody who can, do what they were doing 7-8 months ago. Like a fire drill.

(I know many of you never stopped & are still out there every day. 🙏🏻 & I bet many folks are, like me, not actively patrolling atm but still part of the same chats, active/dormant as they may be, notifications off or on.) Just saying, what if we dialed it back up for a day? Exercise that muscle?

You'd be surprised how easy it is for some people to confuse "she set a single boundary" with "she wanted me to get out of her life" and it's because they can't fathom having a relationship that has any boundaries, therefore an enforced boundary equals the end of the relationship.

one for me one for my college kid’s absentee ballot which we retrieved from Fargo last weekend on a visit and I hand-delivered to Mpls Election and Voter Services today
