If we are introducing ourselves: Pretty generic Boston-area lawyer. Try cases now and again. Bake and mope occasionally. Sometimes write for Bullshit Hunting about obtaining and analyzing public records, to do stuff like identify shipwreck victims or fight wrongful convictions or whatever.

Genuine question: How do I go about getting a reputation? Though it can be fun, I am a bit tired of having to shock somebody into a state of inarticulate paper-shuffling fluster at the final trial conference every goddamned time.

Is there some kind of legal wingman you can hire to tell people “oh, no, you should be at least a bit scared, although she is very nice and reasonable and gives lots of extensions, she might destroy you.”

The Supreme Judicial Court archives has kindly provided me with the file on a reported case from 1907. Civil case, appeal of jury verdict. Appellant raises evidentiary issues, says damages are excessive. Appellate (or trial, or law, or any) friends: Kindly guess how many pages are in this file.

I have had three wonderful dentists and a psychopharm TA ask me how I ended up with an [ethnicity redacted name] and I explain that it is also an [redacted] name. While every judge asks me, hearing my name, “are you [third ethnicity] or is it your husband?”

Imaginary sleep: The moon shrinks as it rises through overlapping pines. Shaggy branches rub and moan against the wind. Someone has a fire. Maybe we will, too. In the morning I’ll make coffee and sweep orange needles and sand back out the door. I better get started on tracking them in.

Me: Man, I really wanted to try this case. Witness: Man, I really was looking forward to testifying in this case. Judge: Man, I was really looking forward to seeing this case tried. Plaintiff: ….

#31DaysofGravesDay 26: Accident "Jo, aged 4 years and 8 months, son of Job and Emma Bentley of this town, and who on returning from school on the 24th May, 1860, was instantly killed by a fall of planks carelessly piled in Delph Street."

Sadder, even, in the paper. I don't know enough about the UK to say or look into whether there was or could have been a suit, actually. In the US in the 19th century, a parent could sue for wrongful death of a child, but the compensation they'd receive would be for lost services and labor.

I do wonder why, of all the things I learned in a public, vocational high school, a half-drunk stumble south of Boston, the term “cthonic” was among them.

Something like ten years ago, I left a job I loved because I wanted take a run at being a real, state court, stand up, jury trial lawyer. I didn’t know if I could do it. My hands still shake half the time. I blush when overruled. My voice is too loud at sidebar. But I think I am getting there.

It is possible that I might be too depressed to be on here this much right now. Expressing my feelings of worthlessness, futility, hurt, self-loathing, etc., might be exacerbating rather than relieving them. I think I might start trying to limit time here for a bit. Until time for trial selfies.

Imaginary sleep: Feet still cold from misjudging the tide, six hours and three changes of socks later. My sneakers are tied to the picnic table, so they don’t walk away. The sky went gold and red while we forgot to cook. My head rises when you laugh. Leave me here, warm, while you find the moon.

I am going to cheer up, get dressed, do some wholesome New England fall-ass shit. Might pet a goat. Definitely going to see some flowers. Eat the fuck out of some donuts and seasonal desserts. Ferris wheel. Twice. None of you can stop me.

When I go to a county fair I like to go through the arts and crafts exhibits real slow and loudly exclaim about how beautiful and impressive everything is in case any of the people who made things or their family or friends are in earshot.

I love fall so much. I've lived in Vermont my whole life and foliage season still seems like such a completely bonkers and beautiful thing to happen every year. It never gets old. 🍂

I couldn’t remember the term “national guard” so I said “state county reserve.” Like a special kind of jam.
