lived enough places (ORD, BOS, AUS, DTO, ARB, SJC, NRT, LHR, OAK, SFO) for my accent to get terribly confused; now back at the end of the Ravenswood line

man, google's mobile services (ie anything from my cellphone, regardless of whether it's on data or wifi) are hella screwed up; wonder if I'm still pegged to the London region

Let's explore the IceCube Neutrino Observatory! Constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, it embeds ~5,800 ultra-sensitive light detectors (DOMs) in 90 strings through 1 cubic km of ultra-clear glacier ice sitting at very nearly the precise geographic South Pole.

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

Ah, the his of discovering you have either zero or five of any given tool or supply at the rent's house because they get put away in arbitrary and disparate places Today's haul: three modular jack crimpers, zero cable hook clips

The Bears-Eagles game had a mariachi band play the national anthem - and boy oh boy, amongst the players and staff there were *so many* sour faces. I hope they do this more often. (The performance, FWIW, was great and the crowd loved it)

Happy autumnal equinox (or spring for the upside-down folks)! I will celebrate by complaining about my feet being cold for the next six months

Anyway, despite not caring for the opening act, Pink Breath of Heaven was great and me and the other forty people in the club had a good time

Opening act is having trouble staying in key and in time with their click track Volume is definitely too loud for the size of the venue Crowd is overwhelmingly male (80℅+ I'd say) They have Spiteful Brewing on tap, which is helping

Opening act should consider something other than G (or maybe G♭, it's hard to tell) and work on expanding his click tracks to full electronica songs

Saved myself from buying a bunch of retro tech at #vcfmw by having forgotten to go to the ATM prior Seems like it might be showing younger (a good thing) but still too many beards, not enough catgirls

I think the dialect map thing shows that I speak "General American", pretty much; most similar at 51% and least similar at 46% strikes me as within margin of error of each other (I'm also not convinced Californian ain't just the average American vocab, given how many people move there)

It's 99F at 5pm and the only people in the park are me and Elwood and the other two guys with their dogs The dog park is pretty much entirely in the shade and has a filled kiddie pool, which helps

in very rough chrono order: chocolate milkshake, Zephyr's, Chicago steak bomb, Love's, Boston steak tampiqueno, Mercado Juarez, Denton cheeseburger, Clarke's, Mountain View green beans, Red Pepper, HK tonkatsu, Imoya, Tokyo full english fry-up, S&M Cafe, London I remember my travels by food

This post is unavailable.

the largest number of now-gone places I have is in San Francisco (or the Bay Area in general), probably followed up by Tokyo, and then Chicago. Nearly the entirety of my hangouts - food and otherwise - in the SFBA are gone now

Went to Kashgar Uyghur Dining/Uyghur Cafe this evening; it's still in the squooshy opening/shaking-things-out stage. That said: the hand-pulled noodles are great; the laman is wonderful. (They currently don't have lamb, which was a surprise. Also, the acoustics are ass; the place is *loud*.)

Hear me out: this is even wilder than it looks. Out in the ag world, Taylor Farms was THE instigator for a lot of the big food safety moves for lettuce over the last 20 years. That's a legacy that just should NOT have ended up like this.

public health guy@publichealthguy1.bsky.social

it does actually sound like taylor farms and the white house teamed up to try and blame taco bell for the outbreak. unprecedented corruption

nothing like a surprise "go to parents and re-flip their circuit breakers after dad is befuddled, and then build them a Corsi–Rosenthal Box" on like four hours of sleep. got Burt's Place pizza out of it, though

librarian: I suspect I'd be fine; I worked at the library long before my sis did law prof: if I could crib my bro's notes and lesson plans, might be able to fake it; not sure - but given some of the law profs out there, I could hardly be worse

Thought experiment- if you were suddenly appointed to do your sibling’s job, how badly would you suck at it?

You know what's crazy is this video had a whole section about "Hmmm, do news editors have squishy feelings about farmers because of Nepo Baby Solidarity?" but then I cut it bc it was too long & kinda mean. It seems folks have smelt what I was cooking anyway 🤔

Politics of Cars@thismachinekillsfascists.bike

Another good @sarahtaber.bsky.social vid about media owned by nepo babies casting their fellow economic elites (land owners) as precarious protagonists deserving of govt subsidies, while ignoring eg poor farm laborers. (rhymes with coverage of drivers and car infrastructure) youtu.be/BVRRcQjKcPM

Replying to @rahaeli.bsky.social

And it's why the biggest internet safety advice I give parents of teenagers is to make crystal clear that they will never blame their kid for being the victim, because that is the ONLY way they will ever know there's a problem. bsky.app/profile/raha...

rahaeli@rahaeli.bsky.social

Related: People I know IRL who know what I do for a living often ask what they need to know about online safety for their about-to-be-teenagers, and there's a lot of answers, but the thing I always emphasize most is: under no circumstances should you ever threaten to take access away from them.

The Alley you say? Time to dust off this old thing

chicagoreader.comThe saga of Punkin’ Donuts - Chicago ReaderHow a doughnut-shop parking lot became a confluence of Chicago youth subcultures—and what killed it off
Chicago Sun-Times@chicago.suntimes.com

Beloved Avondale shop The Alley, which welcomes you to "a safe place for freaks, misfits and weirdos," wants to chart its next era. Mark Thomas, who has ran the counterculture emporium since 1976, says he's looking for a successor to keep the shop going.

Des Plaines has gotten way more interesting since I was a kid, at least in culinary terms - you can get jibaritos at Jibarito Time, decent-if-pricey ramen at Chicago Ramen, Polish groceries and the pierogi bar at Shop & Save, etc

So @jvl.bsky.social once called this one of the most important pieces ever published at @thebulwark.com Of course, this essay is built on the preeminent work of people like @hcrichardson.bsky.social @jbf1755.bsky.social and @angiemaxwell.bsky.social But I think it is especially relevant today.

Alan Elrod@aselrod.bsky.social

My view is that the American South never fully took to liberal democracy. And I think we have to reckon with that to face the moment we’re now in. I wrote about it for @thebulwark.bsky.social www.thebulwark.com/p/liberal-de...

today's technology fun: the color photocopier at the Niles library utterly refused to make a color copy of my grandfather's NM death certificate
