Always good to see classic SF in the wild: in this case someone reading Flowers for Algernon (1966) on a bus. Here's my take on Daniel Keyes' novel, from last year.
The warrior bug design for Starship Troopers (1997) has got to be one of the all-time great alien/monster creations. Just an outstanding bit of nightmarish imagination.
Starship Troopers art - John Bolton x 4 for Starship Troopers Dominant Species (Dark Horse, 1998), James Warhola (1986), Denis Beauvais x 2 (1997), Naoyuki Kato and Kazutaka Miyatake (1977)

"De-extinction" hoaxer and vocal public execution fan team up for a startup as implausible as it is irresponsible. Like the AI bros they are, they want to terrify you. Dogs of War (2017), it ain't.
*NEW* Colossal Biosciences’ Ben Lamm and Anduril’s Palmer Luckey team up on a new startup to genetically engineer war dogs for the military. Warhound comes out of stealth at $1.2B valuation For @forbes.com with @iainmartin.bsky.social and @mhunterhart.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/amyfel...
Ursula K. Le Guin (1929 - 2018) was born on this day. Last year, I wrote this introduction to her Hainish novels and stories, which make up the bulk of her science fiction.
A year ago this week, I wrote about Robert Silverberg's novel The Masks of Time (1968), about a mysterious visitor from 2999 who causes chaos wherever he goes.
I'm not sure I'd go as far as "masterpiece", but John Gardner's novel Grendel is superb and much underrated by this review, I think.
Those of you holding out hope for a masterpiece released in October 1971 are out of luck (unless you want to pick up the hardback version of Le Guin's excellent The Lathe of Heaven). But, maybe one of these four SFnal titles will tickle your fancy… galacticjourney.org/711018galact...
Very cool to see lines from "Deleted Scenes" in this artwork in Cardiff - for me it's a real highlight of the Manics' Critical Thinking album from last year.
The new artwork is the first in a series of lyric-based installations celebrating Welsh music and creativity that will gradually appear across the city.
For my take on *every* Manic Street Preachers song, from 1988 to 2025, there's my book - available from @bookshop.org, among others.
I'm likely to write about Tower of Glass, but in the meantime here is my most recent piece on a Silverberg novel, the excellent Hawksbill Station (1968).

Open Road and Humble are at it again, with another classic SF bundle: this time featuring the works of Brian Aldiss. 41 books, nearly that many half-arsed covers.
This includes the superb Greybeard (1964), one of the best books I've read so far this year, which I wrote about in June.
I recently received my first royalty statement, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the sales of MANIC STREET PREACHERS: SONG BY SONG. Get your copy: uk.bookshop.org/p/books/mani...
The main star, Zhu Yilong, is also in "Empty Gun" which I saw earlier in the week, although he looks very different in this role. bsky.app/profile/andy...
Back to the cinema today to see Kong Qiang or "Empty Gun", rather vaguely known as "V" in English. An epic crime thriller about an ambitious mainland criminal, set largely in Hong Kong between 1994 and 1998.

We promised you regular new reviews of older SFF - and here’s the first of many! Paul March-Russell on 1956’s Tiger! Tiger! (or The Stars My Destination, depending who you ask) by Alfred Bester: a picaresque, a revenge tragedy, a quest, a romance. Edited, of course, by @kateem.bsky.social.

Common Ground hosts (in the former bank vault in its basement) Curio, the brilliant bookshop which hosted my book launch in March. Sincerely hope they have a secure future, however this plays out.
Strongman said the university was working to find “alternative provision” for Common Ground – which she said had originally been let on a temporary, peppercorn rent basis – and specifically “opportunities close to their current location”.
