I’ve just launched my first podcast. It’s called The Design VC. It’s about the intersection of creativity + capital, and how design shapes early-stage startups (for better and worse). First episodes: Des Traynor (Intercom), Jake Knapp + John Zeratsky, Kate Aronowitz (GV).

AI hasn’t reduce the amount of work to do, freeing up time. Instead it’s reduce the bar, allowing me to do more work I originally didn’t have the time of bandwidth to do, but now can.

2 years ago I would have filled micro-gaps in my day with a quick scan of social media and the odd post. Now i’m filling those same gaps by steering various AI agents I currently have running. Not better (or necessarily worse). But noticeably different.

We live in a society that values certainty and forward moment, even if it turns out to be wrong. In that environment. leaning into uncertainty, having nuanced opinions or wanting to check and confirm you’re workings comes across as hesitanice, weakness and incompetenc.

The latter is the space designers inhabit. They like to test assumptions, lean into discomfort, explore the boundaries, look at things from a different perspective, and ultimately slow down to speed up.

This is also why designers struggle with the certainty of leadership teams, and often come across as difficult, disruptive and not a team player (even when they are trying to be their most helpful).

Bought two return train tickets to London but got distracted and didn’t pick them up. Realised literally 10 seconds later so went beck to the machine. There was a mother with her teenage son and daughter at the machine looking at some tickets. I asked if they’d seen my tickets. They said no.

I asked if they were sure They showed me their tickets saying that they had just bought them. They were of course to the same destination as me. Wasn’t sure what I could do so basically walked away. As I walked away they went back to the machine and started buying single tickets to Gatwick airport.

I think they were hoping that the tickets they found in the machine would also take them to Gatwick, but clearly bottled it and decided to book singles to Gatwick instead. Ended up having to buy replacement tickets. So that’ll teach me to pay attention and not rely on the kindness of strangers.

I don’t believe companies expect software development to durably exist as a profession in a decade or two. So this question is like asking who will be the senior milkmen and telephone switchboard operators?

Could people stop emailing me for a day or two, so I can get back on top of my inbox?* * Of course I should probably stop emailing people first, so this is largely my fault.

So the new Doodle product is super frustrating. They only let you have one live poll at any one time on the free account now, which is totally cool. But they also only allow you to delete one poll every 30 days.

I have 3 old polls which will now take 3 months from me to remove (if I remember), essentially blocking me from using the service for 3 months :(

So Bending Spoons have just bough Miro. Curious who folks think the next most likely acquisition targets will be? Typeform, Calandly, SurveyMonkey, Webflow, Pipedrive, Dropbox?

I miss the days when social media was largely interesting people having interesting conversations about interesting things from their niche communities, and not just reposting something a fascist said, with a slightly snarky comment.

I’ll never understand the mentality of people just throwing their rubbish out their car/van window into the road. What went wrong with their upbringing?

Egrets. I’ve had a few. But then again, too few to mention.

Egrets might be my favourite bird. Ridiculously spindly, super fluffy, can shrink down really small, or tower up high. Lots of great poses. Here’s one I was following for ages at sunrise. #photography #birds

Every time somebody suggests taxing the super rich, newspapers and TV pundits claim it’ll just drive rich people away. On the rare occasion those taxes are applied (like removing non dom status), the research generally shows the number of people leaving for tax reasons are negligible.
