I’ve worked on some games. You might have played some of them. I try to make sure they’re good.

As a long time AAA dev who was sometimes irritated by implications that AAA devs were somehow lesser than indie devs, this response strikes me as quite off base. The individuals who work on these games are incredibly talented. That does not mean critics are obligated to praise the end result.

Activision's head of marketing says Modern Warfare 4 has a "Call of Duty tax" to contend with. "There's obviously a lot of fandom around indie games and excitement around new games popping up ... https://kotaku.com/activisions-head-marketer-says-modern-warfare-4-faces-a-call-of-duty-tax-2000746337

Shouldn’t bother wading in on the discourse, BUT: Even when the news agrees with your own (likely valid) predictions of doom, it still thrives on clicks. Extreme word choices like “complete” in the framing gets you to the page (complete with AI summary har har) and a light, unsurprising story.

Just finished Conclave without subtitles. So well done that I didn’t think to check until near the end whether they were supposed to be there for the Spanish and Italian dialogue. One of the rare films that I actually liked more than the book, and I wonder how much that was a factor.

I enjoyed the book quite a lot, but in a strange way, watching the movie and not understanding some 20% of what was said (while still following enough to get the gist) feels like the right way to experience this story.

(The notable potential exception is Benitez’s pivotal speech, which if you don’t know some amount of Spanish, would probably be a real loss watching this way.)

It’s been a while since I was on social media with any kind of regularity, and so I really want to scroll insta and see how happy my former social support network is, and I don’t understand why it’s all movie clips, queer comedians (ones I don’t know personally), and ads for curly hair products.

Just had a lot of fun at the Austin FC match, thanks to tickets from a friend. There’s a lot going on, but it’s nice to have some uncomplicated fun. But seriously, lads, what was going on in the first part of the second half?! Good recovery tho.

I’m gonna say this one louder for the folks in the back: The fact that Texan progressives’ progress has been limited does not mean that they don’t exist or they have given up. It is a *hard* battle here, for a lot of reasons, one of which is how little support we get from outside the state.

In other words — maybe have a think about why people think coastal liberals are out of touch. If you’re so convinced you would do better, put your money where your mouth is. Literally.

Tonight, Pete Buttigieg rallied for Johnny Garcia and Katy Padilla Stout in San Antonio TX 🙌⬇️ The GOP gerrymandered the Texas map to make sure they win these seats. But the Democratic candidates there are so strong, and their GOP opponents are terrible. So Dems have a real chance to win 👏👏👏

“Too many ICE goons are from Texas.” Sure. One is too many. “The majority of Texans voted for this.” False. Barely a majority of Texans vote. Why are y’all like this? Do you just not want people to try?

ICE shot a man in the back in our neighborhood today. We will not be silent. We are Texan, and Texans don’t back down.

(I really am too smart to let myself get irritated by this. Statistically speaking, they’re probably bots created to stoke anger and division. I’m tired today.)

In the spirit of recognizing my own contributions to a system that rewards conflict over collaboration, I do want to send a big ol’ thank you to everyone standing with Austin and against ICE, wherever they are inflicting themselves today. Together, we can beat this.

Real talk — if you were privileged enough to be born in SF, I don’t have any patience for your nonsense judgment today. Half the reason we’re in this situation is Silicon Valley bootlicking. But sure, let’s blame the disenfranchised for their situation. You’re “helping.”

Andy Burnham is currently being given the access codes for the national computer. It was designed by Charles Babbage inn 1867, is made out of zinc, crystal, and the heart of Lord Nelson, and is located seven miles below the crypt of Westminster Abbey.

Avocado Casanova Tumbleweed left us yesterday evening after 15 years of service. He saw us move to Austin, move in together, get engaged, buy a house, get married, move to England, have a baby, Covid, move back, the loss of two other pets, the loss of my in-laws, the baby grow to almost 8.

It’s kind of hard to express how good a cat he was. I’m not a cat person really. I like them okay, but I don’t bond with the the way I do with dogs. Avi was different though. He liked to give kisses, and he would lure you into complacency so he could bite your nose.

I have such an expertly curated algorithm that I'm seeing posts from Mexican street food restaurants in the US and this is how they're advertising the game tomorrow night. "Good vibes"

More rough news for the video game industry today. It’s been painful to watch good devs put out of a job over and over for the past few years. It’s frustrating and angering and depressing.

You are strong. You are capable. You are curious. You are kind. Everyone has these in themselves. So do you. No company, no government, nobody can take them from you. They are yours. And it’s okay if you forget you have them from time to time. They’re still there for you.

I’ve made a lot of choices I’m not proud of when times are tough. Snapped at people, didn’t give them the benefit of the doubt. Buried my head in the sand, indulged my own naïveté. I don’t fault anyone who finds it hard to be their best selves right now.

But in these times of pressure, that’s the opportunity to be our best selves even when it is hard. We were built for these moments. If you are struggling today, I offer that sharing a kind word to a friend, a stranger, a creator, while it won’t fix things, might help you connect with who you are.

Our games industry is people. Our studios are people. Our teams people, our games by people for people. Our games are made by people, in groups of people, in teams of people, making people things for people. The magic is people, and the people deserve so much better than all this. I am so sorry.

ICYMI - every inkle game (and novel), $20 with a charity cut. (And £2000 raised for @play.breakthrought1d.org so far!)

inkle@inkle.co

Okay, so this is massive and we're terrified. Partnering with @play.breakthrought1d.org in the fight against diabetes, the ENTIRE inkle catalogue is on Humble Bundle right now for $20 -- including TR-49, all four novels, both Overboard! games, 80 Days, all four parts of Sorcery! ... everything.

I’m wearing an event shirt today. It’s a medium. The guy who handed it to me told me that it shrinks in the wash. He was worried that he might offend me. By giving me a *medium*. I’ve been this size for about 6mo based on the data. It’s like walking around in a different body at times.
