Pinned post/introduction time! Hi, I'm Amini Allight, I'm making a multiplayer sandbox game inspired by tabletop roleplaying (with optional VR support), a custom FPGA-based VR headset, a variety of desktop software, dozens of game dev tutorials and much more!

I figured this out, and like all good bugs it turned out to be really simple and make me feel stupid for not catching it two weeks ago Writeup coming soon to hopefully save others from making the same mistake in future

I've been quiet because I've been toiling away on a standalone lightmapper for custom engines, but I've reached the point where I'm completely stuck Does anyone know why is this triangular section would be missing in just one reflection probe? It doesn't even correspond to a specific mesh triangle!

Buuut this means my lightmapper works now! Free, beautiful and easy-to-integrate baked lighting for any custom game engine that uses glTF and PBR #gamedev

Volumetric path tracing adventure continues: added single-scattering by approximating the shadow ray transmittance using ratio tracking. Took a while to get all the coefficients right. Left: raymarched, right: path-traced #graphics

Maybe the perfect alignment with the bounds of the cubemap is a sign that this is a non-uniform wave issue in the compute shader that creates the cubemap?

Friends, I am absolutely ludicrous, and here is a gravity sim that doesn't use velocity or calculate any force. In a usual sim, you track position and velocity, and update the position every frame by adding the velocity. Mine just tracks the current position and last position. [...]

Alright... I got nothing interesting to work on, so I guess I'm hopping into Blender to build a simulation that doesn't track velocity.

It's TIME! TO! GET! HYPE! Today, I get to proudly unveil Steam Hype, the project I've been working on with the help of @hookshot.media for the past two and a half months. A new PC gaming site which aims to demystify PC gaming, cut through the 100+ daily releases and spotlight indies as much as AAA

steamhype.comSteam HypeSteam Hype is your go-to destination for discovering the latest, greatest, and most talked-about games on Steam.

That is a bad sign... I feel conflicted because I want this game to succeed yet I haven't played it much past season 1, which feels a bit hypocritical I think it's the anti-cheat, the game is good enough that I'd hop on for a round or two if it was easy, but I'm not consistently rebooting for it

Marathon's new content has been delayed and Bungie is dropping seasons altogether as its extraction shooter fights for its life. Both cheaper than I expected and still awkwardly expensive

The third Valve hardware product Steam Frame is finally out! Steam Frame 256GB Kit: - $1059 - £889 - 1049€ - CDN$ 1529 Note: Half-Life Alyx included // Power Supply not included.

Is there a name for this web page style? Absolutely everything looks like this now: dark bluish background, faintly tinted text, rounded features, thin borders, lots of accent colors used on the borders I'm guessing AI is involved somehow

New chamfered and rounded cylinder primitives for game masters to decorate environments with! I think I'm going to do a few more batches of primitives and then force myself to fix up the netcode no matter how much I'm dreading it #gamedev

I thought the "they're going to force cloud gaming" takes were probably wrong, because RAM is just worth less (to the people selling the RAM) running games than running AI regardless of whether it's in your house or in a server And now Game Pass Ultimate only gets you 15 hours of streaming a month

Anybody ever replaced this PCB in an index controller before? my main interest is trying to replace the stick without soldering

I realized it wasn't really possible for game masters to depict a candle in my game so I added the new droplet shape to create the flame! #gamedev

Yup, I have quite a backlog of tutorial ideas but I'm held back by wondering what's the point when you can (probably, I haven't extensively checked) get the same instructions from a model or even just ask it for the final code directly

this wave of AI has legitimately killed a huge part of what I loved about seeing stuff online, what I loved about being an educator, and what I loved about sharing my own work I just don't feel like doing it anymore

But then writing renderers and audio engines for your games by hand has been at least a little inefficient since whenever Unity became viable, I probably just have to accept it's now a little more inefficient than it already was

Finally got around to finishing some new customizable shape primitives These can be used to make architectural pillars or repeating industrial shapes like whatever those cylindrical insulators(?) on substations are called #gamedev

hooray! eric (audio toy) has achieved triple-mixed-metaphor bliss! the outer language transpiles to C and lets me write arbitrary DSP-ish stuff (think, new synths, algorithms); it can embed strudel style patterns via inline mininotation, AND submodules with guis, including... trackers, that now...

Oh cool! Maybe I should wait for this instead of returning to my now-ancient flat playthrough...

I wish when recording staticy radio dialogue that cuts out more devs would record the entire line and then cut it afterwards I can usually hear in the voice that they've finished speaking, the final word sounds different somehow

Harder than you'd think to write an algorithm to find and close these holes where two procedurally-constructed edge lines meet, my brain is exhausted 😩 #gamedev

Vault Breaker is a much improved version of Marathon for me, still tense and difficult without being miserable, I thought it might be boring having only one map but actually it reminds me of Prey: Mooncrash, which I love Just wish it was going last longer than two weeks

Trying to keep NaNs out of your project is so tough if you weren't fanatical about it from day one Apparently rotations can cause your unit vectors to lengthen so dot(p, q) returns a number slightly larger than 1, which causes acos(dot(p, q)) to return NaN I've been doing that for years 😭 #gamedev
