Unlike other operators, SpaceX Starlink is using strictly proprietary Layer2/3 protocols from space to the terminal. Only IPv6 SLAAC is somewhat standard, while IPv4 sports (also proprietary) horrendous carrier grade NAT.

El-cheapo LEO satellite constellation like Starlink has some interesting features though, like being deterministic like clockwork. One can build a pre-emptive L2 SDN instead of OLSR-que dynamic routing or switching.

However, when things break (and they will in space), I'd still prefer the OLSRv2 overhead over the risk of complete blackout.

SpaceX does not participate in Internet Engineering Task Force or IEEE, which have largely laid the interoperable foundations for today's Internet. Why? Because they prefer monopoly and extreme data analytics is easier with black box protocols.

Their approach reminds me of early 3G, where operators insisted on backhauling all traffic to aggregation points (for billing every last bit). Protocols like ATM were deployed (also to xDSL) to combat the evil Internet, and service innovation was pushed back up to a decade. Just to maintain control.

Why? Mostly to analyze and control users' traffic, much like what was the pre-Internet telco strategy. It may provide short term gains, but ultimately interoperability and standard protocols will prevail what comes to innovation.

KPNQwest Münich datacenter in 2001. As the VP of Engineering, I was told it is 'completely full' and sold out, and desperately needs dozens of new 10Gbit/s connections. As is my habit, I traveled onsite and found a Twin Peak'isquie scene - hall after hall.. of empty data center space. Déjà-vu?

Nykyistä USAn presidenttiä ihmetellessä on hyvä muistaa, että demokraatti FDR antoi 1944 Stalinille luvan tehdä Helsingistä tulimeren niin, että jopa 200000 siviiliä olisi saanut surmansa. Pommikoneista yli kolmasosa oli amerikkalaisia. Kiitos ilmatorjunnan kuolleita oli paljon vähemmän.

Silloisen informaatiosodankäynnin parhaimmistoa oli pitää suurta meteliä saksalaisista BF109G -yöhävittäjistä. Neuvostopommittajat pelkäsivät niitä valmiiksi ja pudottivat usein pommit mereen päästäkseen nopeasti pois.

Ennen kuin maallinen matkani päättyy, haluaisin jostain vielä suljetusta arkistosta tiedon, miksi Saksa antoi parhaita hävittäjiä ja aivan viimeistä huutoa olevaa tutkakalustoa (Raija, Irja ja Riitta) puolustamaan.. Helsinkiä.

CAN-transceiver measures 120ohm, regulator supplies steady 5V and the Motorola 68k takes good 220mA. Seems like a rare case of EEPROM failure in a spare Saab ECU. Some nice soldering after getting new chips.

Hieman yllättäen yksi erästä väittääkin sisältävänsä oikean Analog Devicesin AD9361:n. FPGA on vanhempaa mallia, jossa Ethernet kiertää vielä ARMin kernelin läpi. Katsotaan.
