I watched a documentary about Oscar Michaud today and all I could think about when they were putting his work in conversation with Birth of a Nation was "I'll bet @moviessilently.bsky.social would have some COMMENTS"

Maybe it is the abuses that create division, not report of the abuse, not consequence for the abuse. Maybe it is bullying that causes division, not fighting the bully on behalf of the bullied. Maybe it is lies that cause division, not the telling of truths. Maybe we need to change the frame.
If you need multiple jobs while doing full time school, as I did, that counts you out of a TON of internships. I wasn't able to do one in undergrad and that severely affected my job prospects. In grad school I had to find my own paid internship to graduate. I have a mortgage in student loans.
Financial precarity. Yes university students have always been living on their last 20 bucks, but the number of students I talk to now who have *multiple* jobs in addition to being fulltime students, some of whom are taking care of family members' survival needs as well as their own, is shocking. 5/

I've lost 40-ish pounds and my joint pain is exactly the same. From everything every doctor and busy body has said I should be pain free. Weird. Maybe the weight gain was a symptom of the pain and not vice versa!
I had a point where walking left me in enormous pain. I went to one doctor whose main answer was "stop being fat" and just...didn't ask anyone else about it for a long time. I tried so many things.

If any country wanted middle aged, middle class Americans, I'd be there in a second.
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups" Something tells me it's more than wanderlust

It didn’t go far enough. It never went far enough.
Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far. So much work remains to be done.
Part of my job is sending out emails every quarter to every project manager at work who has a federally funded project to remind them to do their MPRs and FFRs. This last quarter FEMA was inaccessible due to the shutdown. Their auto reminders sure do work, though!
PSA for people with NIH grant periods starting January 1st (including most NIGMS MIRAs): your RPPR is due Saturday, but they haven’t sent out the usual automated reminders, presumably due to the shutdown
