Then went I to work and all of my customers were nice today. Now starts my one-day weekend. Having my version of a Hocus Pocus to celebrate. (gin, Cointreau, vermouth, fernet, tangelo wedge garnish)

At the coffee spot, Weasel and Carol turned up to play some bluegrass and American folk. I ate a brownie, and talked to all the other locals excited for the opening. Then we biked home, five minutes alomg the coastal trail. Sometimes living in a small community is the purest best thing.

This one is crazy. Anyone even remotely involved in alcohol marketing would see all sorts of alarm bells here. Again, what did they use for prompt? Do you think they asked for a moko-style tattoo? Grief? You can't associate alcohol with grief. Like, at all. Yikes.

Spent some time looking at this new vodka brand new "Vodkher". It's a vodka, but get this... It's for women. Which like, idk. A quick look at vodka demographics doesn't give us a lot of info, but it seems like women are already across vodka.

This one bums me out because I think I know the person whose image has been stolen. A multi sports legend, and an entrepreneur who built and sold an incredible brand. If not her, an amalgamation of women athletes either way. "Go queen"!

Anyway. I don't think they've done any of this in bad faith. It's pretty gross and bad though . However any brand who goes for this "what if drink but for WOMEN" marketing doesn't generally make it past six months so we won't see it ever again. And that's my take on "Vodkher"

The bad stuff you ask? They've used ai for the pictures of the women. They've invented candid moments, and avoided paying women in the process. What words do you think they used to prompt this one?

As for the marketing, highlighting of the word "female" is a bit of a red flag, but I don't think it's in bad faith. I'd probably avoid using it in my branding either way. It's giving terf, whether intentional or not.

Before we get to the bad stuff, it's also a very crowded category. To make it more difficult, they are targetting premium. They are segmenting their brand to a slither of the market in NZ, an already small market, dominated by multinationals who can crush you with one inexpensive local campaign.

Globally vodka skews male, due to Russia and surrounding countries. In the US, women are more than 50% of the market. I can't find stats for NZ but I suspect it's similar to the US, if not higher.

It's founded by Sharon Hunter. I didn't know much about her. She seems alright. Her and her husband are/were rich listers who have a charity for Ukraine (Kiwi KARE) and it looks like it's pretty good.
