26 years after they stole Florida right before our eyes, and after a decade of clear efforts (some obs successful) to steal elections), normies are still imagining that this is could be a free and fair election. Kids, we are a banana republic and they are ten steps ahead of us.

Yes, Botstein had unilateral authority to determine outcomes in Title IX cases for years, and was widely rumored to routinely intervene on behalf of perpetrators. pod.link/1696774612/e...

Ah, the NYT article says that Jamie Raskin alleged, and Bard confirmed, that Botstein had "unilateral decision-making authority" over Title IX investigations up to 2015. Which is not normal. How would Bard's lawyers ever have agreed to that?

victims of abuse often experience loud and indignant denials of that abuse as nothing less than a continuation or re-enactment of the abuse. It can be devastating. If you have never been in that position, maybe think twice before you say anything. That does not mean silence, it means care.

Understood, but this is also in some sense about public spaces vs private spaces. Most US universities are not within cities in quite this way, and are governed by rules about protest that we ought to interrogate.

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

It’s a quintessential French experience when your institution is blockaded by protesting students. This is precisely what American students should have done when their institutions began capitulating to the Trump regime.

I know politicians lie, but in other eras the lies often were more subtle. They wanted to win over their interlocutors. The way you know this is fascism is that their lies are so vast, they are so disinterested in persuasion. They demand nothing short of submission to the lie.

There is a news story in Canada about someone suing people who shared rape accusations to "clear his name." Regular people struggle to understand the extent psychopaths will go to punish their accusers. Their rage indicates injury, sure, yeah, just not the kind of injury others experience.

yup

I wrote about the broader political situation and stupid incentives that led to a Senator attempting to advance his political career by falsely accusing Jack Smith of attending a February Atlanta Hawks game in which Clint Capela put up a double-double. defector.com/jack-smith-e...

your daily reminder that fascists do not need a political majority to seize and hold power. About 30% can do it, as long as those who might otherwise stop them fail in the face of compliant police, courts, and the military (where fascist tendencies are already overrepresented).

In opposing reconstruction southern elites convinced poor whites that race mattered much more than class. Right now a plutocratic elite is ginning up the rage of alienated young white men by convincing them that their real enemies are women, people of color, etc. They want them to enact violence.

We need to talk about inequality in all forms. The attack on woke is a lot of things but it is also about silencing those who would challenge the glaring inequality of our moment.

Yes, Chud 1.0 Was Crazy. Now Where’s the Accountability?

Watching leading Democrats go to war against anything to the left of them is a daily reminder that we are not going to solve any of this. Our choice is between bloodthirsty fascists with no intention of giving up power, and dem elites who will defend their expense accounts to the death.

The thing about living in a different country from your family is that you’re at much higher risk of thinking someone died because of yet another call in the middle of the night.

The erasure of poor and working people from city centers so that gentrified 15 minute cities might emerge - good for developers, good for tourism, good for the wealthy - was not an accident. It was a conscious policy choice.

This is an immensely important observation. A huge proportion working and middle class people are trapped in communities where they must rely on private cars for their daily needs. The 15 minute city feels, to them, like a zone of exclusion.

There's a wealthy village adjacent to my small city and we go there often for ice cream. Their streets are full of bikes, ebikes, scooters, golf carts, kids, and slow driving motorists. I attribute it completely to the street design and it pisses me off that we reserve it for the wealthy.

In classic BC fashion, it has three lanes.

The Lions Gate Bridge, opened in 1938, is a suspension bridge that crosses the first narrows of Burrard Inlet and connects the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, to the North Shore municipalities of the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and West Vancouver.

this is exactly where we are.

Lindsay Beyerstein@beyerstein.bsky.social

I can't stress enough what a crisis this is. Trump's own intelligence agencies concluded that Iran attacked Minnesota's critical infrastructure and Trump is saying that it's Minnesota's own fault and denying it was Iran. The federal government won't defend blue states in a literal war.

Dude, it is an "Ocean view". He's going to need to use his escalade to actually get to the beach, and then there is the parking. And don't get me started about how hard it is to park near Hawaiian beaches. But wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, his shit is on the poor side of town, leave him alone.

Jon Cooper@joncooper-us.bsky.social

How is Ken Paxton able to own at least 15 real estate properties worth around $9 million—including a $1 million property in Hawaii with an ocean view—on his government salary of $153,000 per year? Explain it to me like I’m five.

the thing about the world cup is that it gives you brief opportunities to harass and attack your European friends. Sometimes you get to go all the way, but it is important to seize the opportunity where it arises, because there is always a chance that some asshole named Harry Kane is gonna score.

Of course, GP has long been a lying grifter. Her first major foray into this was selling stems to unsuspecting college kids. Look it up.

It makes sense that the far right loves the idea that trans girls can overpower cis girls, because that naturally follows from the position that cis women are inherently weak. The fact that people nominally on the left adopt this position, and claim it to be feminist, is somewhat more puzzling

The nuance being that this has never happened. Riley Gaines finished in fifth place, and has leveraged that into a million dollar career on the grift. Those who choose to imbibe this shit are making a choice.

Fuckery with the Supreme Court has been the Republican Agenda since Bork. Nominees systematically lying in confirmation hearings, a seat stolen under a false pretense and then another taken in the immediate aftermath of a lost election. R's made the court illegitimate, it is as simple as that.

Wajahat Ali@wajali.bsky.social

Ask every Democrat if they support Supreme Court reform, and if they don't, you primary them or support someone who does. That's it. Without the Supreme Court, we get nothing.

Have any of the people who loudly claim this ever been to a public hospital in most of these places? I loathe the US system, but frenz, rich Mexicans and expat Americans all go to private clinics. Same in much of the world. True universal healthcare is mostly the preserve of rich countries.

UNFUN FACT: The 2026 FIFA World Cup features 48 teams co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. Of the 48 participating nations, the United States is the only one without a universal health care system.

this is correct except that the political crisis started back in 2000 when Bush stole the election and the "heads in the sand vs we should fight" dynamic has been the major split inside the Dem party since then

I have long firmly believed that Canada is the Belgium of North America. And not just in these trifling sporting ways.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

Canada reminds me of Belgium, they always seem to be worse than they should be based on their roster

When the Athletic turns Martin Niemöller's poem into a joke about a badly behaved golfer they really reveal how different the world is when you are sequestered in the clubhouse, drinking gin with your rich buddies. Not a care the world, bowling averages are up, mini golf scores way down.

maybe he should smile more.

Have a pity for Matt Stoller, smeared as a sexist for expressing populist views, just for needing to specify things like "lady politics" and a "feminized lens"
