Incredibly myopic from the funders - governments must support this essential infrastructure

We’re defunding the infrastructure modern biology runs on. PomBase, FlyBase and HGNC; named critical global resources; have all faced funding crises since 2024. Experimental analysis & interpretation and AI models depend on resources like these. Our new paper @GeneticsGSA 👇
doi.org/10.1093/gene...

Guys! @jbahler.bsky.social and I are recruiting a PhD student in this round - if you know great undergrads or Masters students please tell them about us! And Crick in general, of course ;) Thank you!!

PhD recruitment is now open at the Crick, and we're looking for people to join a community of researchers tackling big scientific questions in the heart of London. Apply by 3 November: www.crick.ac.uk/careers-and-... Find out more about the three routes into our 2027 PhD programme in this thread ⬇️

Why did the two gametes (egg♀️ and sperm♂️) start to become different? It's a strategy to optimize the costs and benefits of investing into offspring! Read our brand new @pnas.org story that finds a molecular mechanism behind this evolutionary idea proposed in 1972 by Parker, Bell and Smith.

Happy new year! I've so enjoyed the end-of-year lists of people's favorite papers from 2025, so I made a list of 16 #lipidtime studies from 2025 that I found interesting. Here they are in no particular order (please add more if you would like!), and here's to much more exciting science in 2026! 🧪

Wild and amazeballs

We’re excited to share our latest study that reshapes our understanding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) lipid composition, with major implications for drug discovery, immunity, and vaccine development. www.nature.com/articles/s41... A thread.

We have wondered what a complex archaeal cell might look like ever since 2014. It’s been a long road (and the journey is far from over), but it’s a good time to pause for breath and look. These Asgard archaeal cells are a surprise! And that is the joy of being a cell biologist.

Mammalian cells have KSR, budding yeast has Ste5… and fission yeast has Sms1 as the MAPK scaffold for sexual reproduction! Very excited to share my postdoc work where we discover that the hemi-arrestin Sms1 binds all components of the MAPK cascade, including ERK-like Spk1 doi.org/10.1101/2025...

Out today in @nature.com: Together with the Honigmann, Shevchenko, Drobot and Hof labs, we present a general workflow for imaging the localization and transport of individual lipids in cells and mapping their metabolism. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Yay YAY congrats to everyone - and am super happy for my neighbour (and friend!) Jody Rosenblatt! Jody doesn’t have Bluesky, let me bug her about that

Non-profit journals are on the critical list. The cause: academics obsession with the Nature brand, coupled with the APC $ model. Some will argue it doesn’t matter (“all as bad as each other”). But the fact is undeniable and it’s good guys who put money back into science like COB who are losing..

Seema Grewal@seemagrewal.bsky.social

Thanks @mitodynamics.bsky.social for the fun interview and for saying it like it is: “…JCS and other community journals are being crushed by the mega profit-making journals, which just seem to proliferate and spit out new journals by the day…we must all make an effort to move away from this…”
