Having lived in Japan for 2 years now, there's one thing that I definitely took for granted about living in North America, and that is multilingual support for media consumption. A Thread:

Services that exist in North America and Europe simply just don't exist here in Japan 'cause of licensing. Sure VPN's can help, but it doesn't always work (as a lot of apps and shows are starting to wise up to it!)

Guess I just wanted to share a little bit of learning about life in a country that speaks a completely different language than your own. It's interesting, and I hope I can get better at the language so I can enjoy more of what's here!

I guess as extreme majority of the people living here speak the language, it makes sense to only have that as a subtitle option. It's rare to find a show that has English subtitles, let alone English dub (don't at me here, sometimes I'm not actively watching and using a show as background noise!)

I'm not complaining, I suppose I'm just expressing it was a bit of an "Oh, I guess that makes sense." moment for me. I'm studying Japanese every day to hopefully lessen this gap. People always ask me if I've watched any good anime lately. Problem is, most of it I cannot understand.

It's very common for shows aired in the west to have support for a myriad of languages, whether that is through a dub over of the audio, or translated subtitles! You can go into many shows and find different audio tracks or subtitles for many languages.

I know enough Japanese to get by, but not enough to really sit and follow along with a story of a TV show of a movie. So it was very surprising when I first got here, and turned on the subtitles of an anime and only found one option: Japanese.

Did you know you can pan-fry pizza rolls? The package doesn't say that, but no seriously, you can cook them on medium heat with a little bit of butter or oil. They get crispy and they're not nuclear in the middle! Dust 'em with Parmesan cheese after to make 'em even better~
