Can we bring back the giants? 🦬 Britain once had many more large herbivores, including aurochs, wild horses, wild boar, red deer, roe deer, elk (or moose) and the steppe bison.  Image: Szymon Bartosz/iStock 1/4

📢 18-month PDRA in computer vision/3D reconstruction coming very soon. Interested? Get in touch! In collaboration w. Selvino de Kort & Brad Cain (MMU), Peng Wang (Uni. Surrey), @adamvanc.bsky.social (MPI) and Lisa Holmes (Chester Zoo)

Ki Crabtree presents her PhD on head centre of mass and how this has changed in humans compared to chimps 💀🐵🦍

anatsoc.bsky.social@anatsoc.bsky.social

Next, we look at the #biomechanics of head balance in humans and chimpanzees. By modelling the contributions of multiple interacting tissues & features, this study found that overall #skull architecture plays the biggest role in determining the head's centre of mass.

Roger Kissane from @livevobiomech.bsky.social at #AnatSocSummer26 in Bristol. Rabbits are weird at everything, including chewing. But why are they so different?

anatsoc.bsky.social@anatsoc.bsky.social

How do rabbits adapt to tougher foods? Using XROMM and EMG, this fascinating study showed that rabbits extend the power stroke of chewing when processing harder foods. This reveals the extent of flexibility in mammalian feeding biomechanics.

Emily Baxter from our @livevobiomech.bsky.social presents her PhD on skull growth in children and craniosynostosis at #AnatSocSummer26 She found the lateral sutures have more impact on craniofacial shape compared to medial sutures 💀

anatsoc.bsky.social@anatsoc.bsky.social

Our next speaker characterised normal craniofacial growth, compared it with #craniosynostosis, using 3D landmarking and geometric morphometrics. The results emphasise the morphological integration of the #neurocranium and #viscerocranium, with direct relevance to surgical planning.

Our PhD opportunity is still open. A match-funded project with @chesterzoo.bsky.social, where the student will also be a Conservation Scholar. An exciting interdisciplinary project that can be tailored to the student. Even the pigeons are interested in our LiDAR scanner!

Charlotte Brassey@cbrassey.bsky.social

We’re interested in folks applying from all manner of disciplinary backgrounds. Biology, zoology of course. But also computer science, remote sensing, architecture. If you’re keen to work with LiDAR and point clouds, we’d like to hear from you!
