🎉🚧 Happy National Chemistry Week! 🧪🏗️ This year, we're celebrating the critical role chemistry plays in the strength, safety, and durability of the structures we use every day, Discover theme resources and learn more about how you can celebrate: buff.ly/4MTIEHR #ACS_NCW #NationalChemistryWeek
At the conference, they can celebrate their heritage, feel empowered, and find mentorship opportunities. For Amador, honoring their founders, elders, and culture is at the core of SACNAS. It helps create a strong sense of community and a place where everyone feels like they belong in science. [2/3]

These two researchers helped answer one of the great questions of science: How could nature create homochirality from achiral starting materials? Click the link to learn more: buff.ly/XOxdSPT 1/7
This was the final experimental proof of a theoretical model from 1953 outlining the requirements for the chemical “evolution” of homochirality: an asymmetric reaction that’s self-catalyzing and shows mutual inhibition between the two possible chiral products. [6/7]
In recognition of their accomplishments, Kagan and Soai have jointly won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Read the ACS President’s comments about the announcement at buff.ly/MZiumcc. 7/7

Henri B. Kagan showed in 1986 that a small excess of one catalytic enantiomer can lead to a larger excess of the desired product due to mutual inhibition, a phenomenon known as “non-linear effects.” 4/7
Kensō Soai reported a reaction in 1990 that was both autocatalytic & enantioselective — two things that had been done before but never together. 5 years later, Soai & colleagues reported an asymmetric autocatalytic reaction in which the product had a higher enantiomeric excess than the catalyst. 5/7

The amino acids, sugars, and nucleic acids that make up our cells are homochiral, which means that in living systems you’ll only find one enantiomer, or one molecular version of a mirror-image pair. 2/7
We knew of reactions that could make chiral molecules from achiral ones, but the products would be 50/50 mixtures. A reaction that could create an enantiomerically pure product from completely achiral reagents seemed elusive, until … 3/7
