The trial court concluded that the plaintiffs had failed to demonstrate that every single one of New Jersey’s school districts is unconstitutionally segregated. This requirement reflects a misunderstanding of the claims and the applicable law.

Our brief argues that in demanding proof of segregation in every district, the trial court imposed a standard untethered from precedent and hostile to constitutional enforcement.

It’s been well documented that students throughout NJ attend racially segregated schools. This case was filed seeking a ruling that this segregation violates the state constitution, but the trial court declined to deem NJ’s segregated public school system unconstitutional.

Alongside co-amici Brown’s Promise and the Racial Equity in Education Law and Policy Clinic of Georgetown University Law Center, we filed a brief to address flawed conclusions in the trial court’s decision. Now, the Appellate Division will hear oral argument in the case.

We’re hiring! We’re seeking a strategic, collaborative, and values-driven lawyer to become our next Deputy Legal Director. 8+ years of experience required; $165K; Hybrid (two days a week in our Newark office). Learn more and apply ⬇️

Everyone in America has the right to move freely without being surveilled. We’re in📍Trenton today urging the Legislature to take action on the unchecked use of mass surveillance technology in New Jersey. Here's what we're acting on ⬇️⬇️

We're also testifying on A759, which would require the Attorney General to study law enforcement use of facial recognition technology & issue recommendations for Statewide policy. We're supporting this bill with amendments.

Flock isn't just selling cameras. It’s building a national surveillance network. They record where we were, when we were there, and over time can reveal our religious practices, medical visits, political activities, personal relationships, and daily routines. Take action at aclu.org/get-flock_out

One year ago today, James Comer was released from prison after challenging the 75-year sentence he received when he was just 17 years old. Because of James’s legal cases, no child in NJ will receive a de facto life sentence, and people facing those extreme sentences can petition for early release.

James’s resilience and unwavering belief in positive change have forever advanced youth justice in New Jersey. His story demonstrates how important it is to value second chances, especially for young people.

In a powerful moment years in the making, we had the honor of joining James and his loved ones when he was released from prison. We’re honored to continue to uplift James’ story. 📸: Steve Hockstein/Harvard Studio Photography

ICYMI: We filed suit on behalf of @lwvnj.bsky.social & three individual voters who have been unlawfully targeted by the Ocean County Board of Elections. The Board has discriminated against voters and put unconstitutional barriers in the way of their right to vote. This is voter intimidation.

nj.comVoters in Jersey Shore town claim they were told to prove they live there or risk losing their voteThe suit says the Oct. 13 meeting where Ocean County would review the voters falls on the registration deadline, so removed voters couldn't re-register for November.

We just filed the first lawsuit under the Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey. We will not let local, state, or federal officials infringe on NJans’ fundamental right to make their voices heard. We’re going to protect every New Jersey voter’s ability to cast their ballot on free and equal terms.
