when you're flipping through the radio and you suddenly hear the little pan flute trill at the very beginning of Sledgehammer

To be clear, this is "Walk & Roll to School Day", put on by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. That is *different* than "Bike & Roll to School Day" in the spring, put on by the Safe Routes Partnership. Why are two competing events being put on by similar organizations? Not sure

Digger is a good film and I enjoyed it. Top 5 Tom Cruise film. 4 people in my theater, and two of them left early. Those of us who stayed were the ones who were laughing the most.

Nakano-based fashion brand THUNDERBOX is releasing a new high-quality, made-to-order stadium jacket designed in collaboration with iconic Japanese resale store chain HARD-OFF. The slick new piece is adorned with the store's famous blue “junk” boxes and declares REUSE GOES HARD.

9 animes? Sure, I can do that, but the themes that emerge are "difficult to explain to normal people" and "not a lot of cosplay of these." Honorable mention G Gundam of course

This is amazing and fantastic and every NHL team should be racing to develop this tech and get it installed in as big of an area as possible in their rinks. If you think of it, there is such a big advantage for hockey to be able to embed stuff over other sports! news.sportslogos.net/2026/09/18/o...

For those from out of town, the problems include design that encourages speed, residential driveways on winding 2 lane roads, and my favorite: Intersection on top of hill so southbound cars can not see lane markers on the other side

Luckily the answer is obvious (Go down to one traffic lane for the entire length of the road), but presuming that they'll need a bunch of "studies" to get ready for all the screaming from drivers that will happen when they announce that

Wipeout 3 (1999). Still transcendent in raw aesthetics, there's a timeless pleasure in precisely gliding over spiraling tracks of reinforced concrete at five hundred kilometers an hour to Sasha and Orbital.

Really excited for standardized EXIT designations and signage to be rolled out system wide. The integration with Google Maps and the first round of exit labeling has been a game changer at Metro Center already when exits of the same station can be miles apart.

Metro@wmata.com

👆The signs above are just the first part of a six-week installation process! By the end of October, every sign inside and outside the station will be replaced with our updated design.

Also: New design standards 😍😍😍📐📐😍😍😍

It may seem unfamiliar at first glance, but multiple rounds of feedback were considered to finalize this effort. The results are exciting - a clearer set of signs to address navigation decisions at key decision points.

The Hirshhorn Museum is one of my favorite spaces, so I'm excited that this Garden revamp is about to open. Obviously a challenging project since this is its 3rd iteration since the 70's, but Sugimoto-san is up for the challenge of pulling it all together I hope. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/07/g...

As someone who has done a smattering of food photography over the years, it's fascinating how many of the basic principles of that form are violated in images like these. It's a narrow, predictable aesthetic, would guess models could rip that off!

Frankie Huang 黄碧赤@ourobororoboruo.bsky.social

Just. WHY would you advertise your catering with all AI-generated images? The food look like rubber!

Key thing, if you're curious, is that the light is much too bright from the front. Go check out some real stuff, the key light is (surprisingly) usually in the back, lots of shadows in the front sides. Who knows why, it just looks right

One of my favorite nights at my old job was accompanying the Japanese Ambassador to the Yayoi Kusama show at the Hirshhorn museum, got a great picture of him having fun with the art. Her art had a lot of depth and variety, but of course had a welcoming, easy to "get" feel that invited people in

5. Wiggum: No, no, dig up stupid! 4. Ralph: Me fail English? That’s unpossible. 3. Homer: A $20 bill can buy many peanuts. Money can be exchanged for goods and services. 2. Bart: Don’t do what Donnie Don’t does 1. Homer: You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.

The five Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most: 5) Milhouse: My Dad’s a pretty big wheel down at the cracker victory 4) McBain: Ice To See You 3) You Don’t Get Friends with Salad 2) Homer: And who can forget rat boy? 1) Comic Book Guy: “Is there a word in Klingon for lonliness? Oh yes. ‘Aag-plach!’”

It's a good prompt because 90% of the things my parents said were quotes from 70's SCTV or SNL, and now my kids just say things from the Simpsons, the Beavis and Butthead movie and Newsradio all day without any context.

As a bit of a photographer, I despair at how many honestly prefer this look, this Dead World where the skies are blue, but shadows are somehow soft. Where the sidewalks don't have gum stuck on them. Where the lighting, fonts, and people are all Stock. Where wrinkles are only on people Old Enough.

Rory Blank@roryblank.bsky.social

Facebook showed me a page that posts AI written posts accompanied by AI generated images of Austin tourist destinations and city landmarks that look nothing like the actual locations and it's more unsettling than most other AI content I've seen a repulsive hyperreal imitation of the city i live in

If it's their own photo, they'll put filters on until the Dead World emerges, all green grass, no scuff marks. Their phone camera lies in HDR before the photo even gets to their screen, shadows buffed, colors popped. When Meta makes glasses showing real time Dead World, they'll sell billions

Some good background here on Yasukuni for those interested in Japanese politics and want to go past the annual headlines about visits and protests.

This is a really...thing-focused perspective. I wrote about exactly this in my book HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS -- the quotidian luxury of our homes compared to the past -- and I still think the real change is our *collective* infrastructural systems for electricity, water, communications, and more.

This is a really beautiful website by @jdworkin.bsky.social on the everyday household items that were once only dreamt about – a music player, nightlight, family photos, clean water, ice, spices, and more. 10/10 would recommend exploring it! ordinaryabundance.com

My favorite time of the year: Season of wall to wall ads for Maryland Ren Faire across the entire Washington Post website. Elaborate, constant, and bizarrely fancy for an event that sells out completely every year no matter how high they raise ticket prices.

In the "solutions" sections of this and other pieces like it, I never see anything like "Women having kids is tremendously important, so country X is paying them how much its worth to everyone". Free childcare, free healthcare, plus $25k/kid tax free would move the needle, lets try that.

This post is unavailable.

Would be a big budget ticket, absolutely, but apparently its critical so any tax rises and budget cutting needed would just have to be done. Unless people just want young people to have and raise kids for no tangible benefit, just because it will provide future benefit for the community?

correct. Finland driving culture is incredibly easy and safe because of the ubiquitous speed cameras (and well designed streets) heatmap.news/politics/hel...

Boo!-per Lund@cooperlund.online

Driving a car is incredibly dangerous, it should be one of the most regulated experiences on earth, and it is very upsetting to watch people who correctly don’t trust the cops turn against automated enforcement because the alternative is relying on a cop’s judgement to enforce the laws.

Free million dollar idea: Baseball Minus Baseball Night. Off night for the team, all game ops. Give the people what they want: - Mini games for prizes - Kiss cam (3x) - Dancing to "Jump Around" - Trivia - Anthems - Cheering for military - C-List celebs waving - Organ covers pop hits - Sing-alongs

Additional Must-Haves: - Just people on the TV realizing they're on the TV - Screen says I clap now - Throwing shirts - Mascot goofs - Chanting name of country - 50/50 Raffle - 7th Inning Stretch - Flyover But under no circumstances any baseball.

Yes, nostalgia is the most toxic impulse, but, sure, I will remember some guys from TV just this once.
