“digger? ha! I hardly kn—“ my vision whites out and fades to my wife sitting by the slides with her friends. she’s sad she never gets to pet marco, she thinks he loves her brother more. I couldn’t name the elementary school she went to. I didn’t even know she had a dog. “I hardly know her” I mutter

me, crying, sitting in an office room looking over traffic cam footage with two animal control officers pointing out the moment my cat jumped out the window of my car at a red light when I was trying to take them to the vet: that’s me in the corner that’s me at the stoplight losing mr mittens

ME: computer; show me Jeans Number Post please COMPUTER, transcribing IMG_6618.JPEG from the Favorites category on my phone: “ME: computer; what is my Jeans Number please\nCOMPUTER: your jeans number is 5. the ultimate compromise of durability & comfort\nME: (Smiling)” ME: (Smiling)

every villain needs to take into account the possibility that some random 12 year old will come out of nowhere and foil all 100 years of your meticulous plotting

Nameless bossa nova tracks drift down from the black expanse. I watch the employees make lattes and linger. I watch the people here swipe and type at their computers. I imagine what this space looks like from above the floating ceiling, from the eleven fixed perspectives I’ve been able to notice.

From where I sit, my eyes always return to the glowing red “EXIT” sign and fire alarm pull station. From where I sit, I sense that everything is exactly where it must be. From where I sit, twelve.

Two employees, twenty patrons. Eleven cameras. One guards each exit. One monitors the glass-walled employee break room. Two monitor the entrance to and interior of the kitchen. One looms directly above the tablet register.

The remaining watch. The remaining describe every wall, every corner, every table, every body in this room. Everything within the white-walled perimeter and beneath the samely-textured floating ceiling is seen.

I know it’s a uniform—the flat, casual affect of her outfit feels as if it is part of the cafe—but she’s not expressing herself in spite of the aesthetic guidelines she was told to follow. These are her clothes. She seems to resonate with it. Every part of her seems to resonate with this place.

Her almost-black hair is the same tone as the dark wooden tables. Her practiced hand has the same precision as the neatly-ordered pastries. Her circular never-lit smart watch with a white band has the same composition as the cameras—the cameras, I’ve counted eleven.

The woman who, yesterday, made my latte and handed me two cups of water and a perfectly opened—perfectly: with a sharp crease down the center of the cap, one edge lifted 45 degrees and the other edge still hugging the glass rim—bottle of Coke, makes my latte once more this morning.

She wears a thick, oversized white tee, loose fitting black sweats, and two-tone sneakers. Black and white, fabric and sole. White, black, black, white.

BAGGER: (spilling my groceries on the floor) Oh God. I'm so sorry. This isn't what I'm supposed to do. ME: How are you supposed to do it? MANAGER: She means she was gonna be a fox. In the woods and shit. But something happened and she got stuck. BAGGER: (crying) Got so stuck.

You are up to date.
