It’s just so appalling and enraging how casual and commonplace this has become. I’m out of words.

Happy Global Encryption Day to those who celebrate. This year's events are brought to you by the number 4 and its friends 56, 66, 115, 155, 156, 230, and 237. I'm glad we got everything patched yesterday and can sit back and relax today.

The details are now public, as of two hours ago. bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi... The secret P-384 keys for these intermediate CAs are all zeros except the last 8 bits. All not-updated software can be MITM'ed now. IOT boxes that can't or don't update are now trivially MITM'able forever.

If you make HTTPS requests or have other TLS clients and care about MITM attacks, you need to update today. If you run Go: go get go@1.27.3 If you run Homebrew: brew update brew install ca-certificates If you run Linux, maybe stay off the internet for now.

Stealing work isn’t a bad thing.

In Computer Science, it can even be quite good.

In 1995, MIT wanted to win the 8th World Computer Chess Championship…really badly. Somehow, they convinced Sandia to let them borrow Paragon, the 2nd fastest supercomputer, to run their chess engine.

Killing Anna, a new production by Bellingcat and Keo Films, will be broadcast in the Netherlands, UK and Latvia this month. The psychological thriller follows a Syrian academic who, using the alias Anna, befriends a former Syrian regime official suspected of involvement in the Tadamon massacre.

With the last commit into DwarfStar now you can use DeepSeek v4.1 Flash in a single DGX Spark as well, with SSD streaming. Around 9 t/s generation. It works also dual-spark RDMA at ~22 t/s.

Frontier LLMs are much better and dramatically faster than I am at finding and fixing bugs. If you are not asking them to debug your code and review your bugs, you are doing it wrong. A thread of Claude wins. (No longer at Google, btw.)

Filippo Valsorda@filippo.abyssdomain.expert

It’s very clear by now that if LLMs are not improving your software quality it’s either a revealed preference (yours or your org’s) for more volume vs more quality, or a skill issue. The level of testing and review they are enabling in the Go cryptography standard library is amazing.

Before semiconductor RAM, most computers used magnetic core memory. This is the 32 KB core stack from the computer on Spacelab, the Space Shuttle's experimental laboratory. Let's take a closer look...

I’ve alway’s thought it’s a shame that WebAssembly has the word “web” in it. Gives it a connotation that it’s “only for browsers” or something.

Meanwhile, NASA’s over here with a flight-compliant derivative (SpaceWASM) intended for spacecraft!

It was, in accelerated fashion, a parallel to how living through climate change is making Republicans far worse on emissions & pollution.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

The Fauci hearing perfectly illustrated how living through a once in a century pandemic somehow made Republicans far worse on public health. God forbid we face anything like covid again during Trump 2.0. There will be no Dr Fauci around to try to talk sense to Trump.

The dishonorable #Kentucky senator #RandPaul wasting taxpayer money on yet another kangaroo court for #AnthonyFauci today is a new low for the #US. #RandPaul is a disgrace!

Something that keeps me up at night is the amount of miscompiled software running in the wild. There’s a famous story, “the Core 59 problem” from Facebook where seemingly random files were missing in one of their Spark databases.

Yikes! It is shocking that there are no checks to catch these types of errors at inception.

LaurieWired@lauriewired.bsky.social

30.9% of genetics papers data are kind of trash because of Excel’s aggressive auto-formatting.

Until 2023, there was no global option to disable data conversion. For example, the human SEPT family (1-14) of genes is directly related to cell division and cancer research.

There are no technical or compliance reasons to double the size of symmetric keys in response to the threat of quantum computers. This common misunderstanding of Grover's algorithm risks wasting limited resources that should go towards deploying actually urgent post-quantum algorithms.

words.filippo.ioQuantum Computers Are Not a Threat to 128-bit Symmetric KeysThere is no need to update symmetric key sizes as part of the post-quantum transition, due to the details of how Grover's algorithm scales. Most authorities agree.

@rminnich.bsky.social did this cause any issues for the #plan9 port too?

How do you kill a Supercomputer?

(Accidentally) using radioactive solder is a good way.

IBM’s Blue Gene/L frequently crashed when running simulations at LLNL.

Turned out that alpha particles from the lead solder in the board carrier were slamming the L1 cache with bit flips.

Making a prediction: #Epstein & #Trump were involved in #Russia #MoneyLaundering and not just #ChildSexTraffic . #Putin has #kompromat , but it would probably implicate him too (remember the #panamapapers?) It's the new #MAD doctrine.
