Data centers have contaminated ground water in Oregon. They've released smog into the air in Memphis. And they've contributed to electricity bill spikes — all while receiving millions of dollars in tax breaks. Is it any wonder why a nationwide backlash against AI data centers is brewing?

They are pigeon proofing the porch of my office today and legit I’m pretty sad. We don’t have a ton of pigeons here. I’m on the second floor so I spent last spring seeing them raise their babies at eye level.

People can have different political opinions about immigration policy. Political differences are fine, healthy for a democracy. But if you’re okay with this, that’s not a political opinion. That is a moral failing. 27/

A gorgeously-written book about wolves & caribou & cold and warming & indigeneity & how to ask questions & when not to & how to see loss & how to witness the beautiful. I knew Neil just a bit years ago, & know his brilliant prose, too hidden, I thought, in Nat Geo. Here is the work unfiltered.

In 1988 the National Geographic Society celebrated its 100 year anniversary. There was a huge celebration out on its property in Maryland, and one of the events was a geo-cache game. Barry Bishop was on my team and we won, so I’m a little sad to find out he lost a nuclear device in India:

nytimes.comHow Did the C.I.A. Lose a Nuclear Device in the Himalayas?A plutonium-packed generator disappeared on one of the world’s highest mountains in a covert mission that the U.S. will not talk about.

I loved many things about working at Nat Geo. I learned my favorite business saying there: When the elephants are running through the forest, stand behind a tree. 🌳🐘

I remembered the time the editor of a national magazine turned down my request to attend a conference but 2 days later said I had nice legs in front of a photographer in an elevator. 1993.

Dunno but I can tell you that, upon reading this headline, I suddenly remembered, for the first time in years, my first faculty meeting as a new biology professor in a department of men when I was asked to make coffee every morning. 😐 I’m lying. I think about that all the fucking time. It was 1990.

Maybe don’t spend all your money on inauguration party bribes and fancy coffees.

JUST RELEASED: our 2nd primer on how communities can respond to data center proposals—and what questions are helpful to ask. The first one focused on questions about water. (See below.) This one focuses on questions about the electricity and the grid. www.sehn.org/sehn/2025/10...

sehn.orgWhen a Data Center Proposal Comes to Your Town — The Science and Environmental Health NetworkBy Peter Montague, SEHN fellow A new data center has been proposed for your town. What do you think? What do your neighbors think? A lot of communities doubt the benefits of data centers, and many ...

Is your community being targeted for a data center or a CO2 capture/storage project? Both have huge impacts on local water resources. My shop @sehnetwork.bsky.social has released a citizen organizing tool for fighting back: 13 questions to ask your electeds. www.sehn.org/sehn/2025/9/...

About to lose healthcare access in our little university town, and at the next closest town which is like 20 miles away. Can’t wait to drive 55 miles to get my fucking finger stitched up next time I misjudge the distance to an avocado.

Last week, Boston received a letter from AG Bondi threatening to prosecute officials and withhold funds unless we cooperate with carrying out mass deportations. The US Attorney General asked for a response by today, so here it is: stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.
