Assume the person weights about 200 pounds Assume the bar is about 20' off the ground, which would put it close to the world record height Assume the pole-loop has a diameter of 20' because why not. The weight of the pole loop is negligible. It works out to be Fuckin fast.

There are, however, rules about not moving your hands on the pole. Because "let me just balance, climb the pole, and hop over the bar" was a thing one particular guy was getting disturbingly good at.

My favorite "not so fast" rule is in javelin, which simply bans "unconventional techniques". Because there was a discus thrower who was nearing the javelin record by spinning and throwing sidearm. The problem: nets are used to catch errant discus throws. Nets can't catch javelins. Aim is important.
