I know it's not fair to blame a technology for how people use it but my bugbear has always been "these mass-market digital assistant LLMs are doing weird shit to people's brains that we're going to still be studying for decades after the industry unravels"

There are a bunch of ways to get around these things, and a bunch of cooling methods that actually don't require anywhere near as much water, but they're expensive, so nobody wants to pay to set them up or upgrade existing infrastructure so everything breaks to do shit as cheaply as possible.

like, christ, look at it: we're doing large-scale enough analysis on text to create an assemblage of reverse-engineered mathematics that behaves in ways complex enough to *solve arbitrary problems.* that's fucking WIZARDRY. and what's it being used for? evil, of course. we live under capitalism

i'm being voluntold to begin training to work on ai and machine learning server racks and learning the technology is fascinating when it's not using outright theft to justify itself, but yeah it's the power draw on these things that anger me to no end

it's ends-driven. most won't take the time to examine the nuance and so even wildly inacurate sentiment is still useful to spread for the purpose of "pop this bubble and bankrupt the bad actors". genuinely useful research and individual use will continue afterwards as they always have.
